I can't find my manual and I need to have my A/C system recharged with freon. In changing out the diesel tanks, I inadvertantly loosened the high pressure side of my freon line and let out all my freon. Now I need to have it completely recharged, so I need the pressure readings and also which freon to use. In this Texas heat, I can't use the tractor until I get it recharged. Thanks!!

Also, if anyone can give me the fuel filter numbers for an 05 5740C I'd really appreciate that too. With the new steel diesel tank I put on my tractor today, I figure they'll be a few filings and welding pieces caught in the filter and I'll need to replace it a couple of times after a few hours.

What type of service fittings does it have? If their the smaller screw on type it's R12, if it has quick disconnect then it's R134a. There should be a service sticker somewhere that list the type of refrigerant and charge weight. Check to see if it's on the receiver dryer or accumulator. A experienced A/C person can charge a R12 system using just the sight glass but R134a systems need to be drawn into vaccum and have the proper charge weight added. The sight glass trick is not accurate on R134a systems and is why most of them no longer have them.

Thanks DieselPower. I'll go check and see if I can find that sticker you're talking about w/ the stats I need on it.

DieselPower,

I checked and the fittings are the kind with plastic caps on them that you just connect to in order to charge with freon. Also, I've checked and there is no sticker on the reciever dryer or the accumulator indicating charge weight or type of freon to be used.

Any off-road equipment built after about 1995 will be set up for R134A. You can charge a partially discharged system without specific technical info by adding 2 to 4 ounces at a time and monitoring the vent temperature and low side pressures. Not the best way, but it works. If the vent temp drops, add another small amount. The low side pressure should not be a vacuum, and most likely is between 15 and 30 psi at moderate to high ambient temps. The BEST method is to monitor vent temperatures as well as both high and low side pressures and compare the pressures to a temp/pressure chart for that machine. DIY A/C work can save a bunch of money, and a good place to spend some of the savings is on a service manual that gives all sorts of good repair info.

If you haven't re-charged the unit by now, call A Tractor Shop of Springtown, located in Springtown Texas 817-221-3039 they should be able to provide you with the correct charge and charging procedure.

Gator,

I bought the tractor from Cody at A Tractor in Springtown in Feb 2005 and I know him well, BUT he is no longer a Montana dealer and hasn't been for well over two years now. I got the impression the last time I talked with him that he wasn't interested in any Montana problems anymore.

RickB,

Thanks, but the service manual for my tractor was written by a drunk Korean, sitting by a rice patty with a bad hangover. It wasn't much help when I bought the tractor and another one for a 2005 model will be the same thing.

Pretty much comes under the category of getting what you paid for. I hope the 'generic' advice I gave can be helpful.

RickB,

With all due respect my friend, my Montana tractor has had no more problems than a "name brand" tractor and cost me about $10,000.00 less when I bought it compared to ANY of the major name brands. Believe me, I shopped around too! In fact, it was the first tractor in the Montana line that Cody, at A Tractor in Springtown, Tx. sold and his dealer papers were completed that same day. My Montana 5740C also came equiped with hydraulic connections in the back that everyone else wanted to charge me extra for. I'll admit that the manual had/has a lot to be desired, but all in all, I'm very satisfied with my Montana 5740C and I'd buy another one. There's not one tractor manufacturer out there that puts out a "perfect" tractor, that won't have any problems. I'll also admit the Montana dealer situation isn't the best, but with the 4 cylinder Mitsubishi diesel engine mine's got compared to a 3 cylinder diesel the rest had in this horsepower, plus all the other features, it's a fine tractor and not some side off brand. I just wish there was a Montana dealer closer to me since Cody isn't a dealer anymore.

So you have a factory service manual that doesn't give basic repair info and zero dealer support. I didn't have to pass judgement on the machine itself.
