Is it possible that my only problem is that I added too much fluid?...

My little Satoh Buck has always been trouble free until this happened. I noticed the gearbox was low on fluid (uses #46 hydrolic fluid; has a FEL)

After adding fluid, and after only about 15 minutes of operation, reverse was GONE! (forward gears work fine)

Is this possibly just coincedence, or is the gearbox too full of fluid? The stick moves into position, but feels like the teeth are not quite meshing; as if the stick needs to move a little farther. I can feel the gears 'touching' as it makes a little grinding sound.

The shifting forks look fine. The gearshift / stickshift (4sp) seems too sloppy to my mechanic that looked at it. He feels that it needs new bearings / springs in the shifter mechanism. $$$$

When we pulled of the gearshift & mounting plate, the fluid was within an inch or two of the top of the gearbox.

Can too much fluid be the problem?

Thanks for the suggestions.

Did you use the exact same fluid as what was in it before?
I've had experience, back in the day, adding oil to old equipment and the new fluid was slightly different and caused the build up of old hardened oil to come off. Loosening everything up.

well, unfortunately I have no way of knowing what the last owner used in the trans. I still have to wonder if too much fluid will cause a failure (?)

I have only owned this little gem for a year or so.

I don't see how your loss of reverse could be from too much fluid. I'd look into the sloppyness of the shifter.

Any idea where I could get the springs / and ball bearings for it?

thanks

I can not see where too much fluid would cause a problem on a tractor that is gear drive. Hydro drive yes, but not gear drive. Now are you sure it takes #46 hydro fluid? Most tractors that share a sump with the hydros and gear box use a universal fluid.

It does take UTF the OP posted back 07/01 /09 under oil & lube I guess he did not like the answer he got back then

thanks again for the great suggestions. I was a little confused about the correct type of fluid for the trans. On an earlier post, somebody kindly provided a link with this info:

Q: My manual says to use gear oil in the transmission. Is this right?

A: No. The manuals were incorrect. Most Mitsubishi tractors use a single system in which the transmission uses the same fluid as the hydraulics. Use Universal Tractor Fluid, AW46 Tractor Hydraulic Oil, JD Type 303 Special Purpose oil or the equivalent. An exception to this is the Satoh S650G, S670 and ST2500. These tractors have a split system with a separate hydraulic reservoir.

(The above quote is from SatohParts.com under FAQ's)

I will definately be changing out the fluid, going with UTF rather than #46 hydrolic fluid.

Also, we will try the suggestion of matching the springs and ball bearings locally @ the Napa store.

Incedently, I lost track of the trread I started earlier in the Lube / Oil section. There was good info there that I would have totally missed! Thanks for pointing it out to me! (Yes, I did like the answers given there!!)

And thanks again for your help here!
