Sounds like you need to walk away from Ford. I had to do the same thing with GM after my 3500 4x4 Dura Junk nightmare.

Back on topic, he really just need to have it serviced and checked out and my money is it will be ok.

Chris

Oh yeah im walking away... and never going back.

Im interested in the outcome of this as well. I got my beef with ford but thats another issue.

THeres a bit of a known issue of trannny fluid leaking from the transmission to the transfercase. apparently this can cause a overfill in the TC and a leak.

I think theres a TSB on it as well. Dave will know if he pulls the check plug on the TC and fluid comes out.

Im still curious about what service was done on the tranny 10k miles ago????

I took it to a local transmission shop this morning.

They said blowing fluid out under high temp and heavy load in reverse was a known issue with Ford. I don't know if it is only F-150 or all.

Anyway, they filled it with fluid and drove it, said no slippage and I was good to go.

Based on this thread, I said "not so fast". Even though I have a tow package and a small transmission cooler I am having a much better one installed, and a complete transmission service.

They said this was a good idea, but I don't know if that was their inner mechanic or their bank account speaking.

Work is being done and I am feeling better about towing my trees across 500 miles of pretty desert-looking country tomorrow.

The previous service was just an oil & filter change, although that is about all a transmission should need.

Good, Glad your up and running and it wasnt too serious!!

The trans service and heavy duty cooler is great insurance considering the load your pulling and the desert haul your doing tomorrow.

I will repeat again...Get a temp gauge on it!

That is good advice. I have a factory temp gauge on my 2001 Chevy 2500HD and I was really surprised how quickly trans temp could rise pulling about 7K pounds at 70MPH with 95 degree ambient temp. I could have easily overheated it if I didnt have the gauge. Slowing down a bit and manually shifting to third cooled it right down.

Trans temp gauges are nice. All my trucks currently have them but they were installed at the factory. I am sure you could get one added at a later time inline with the tranny cooler you are having installed. Probably just before it is the best spot.

You did not mention if you were in 4 hi or low. Using low range on your gravel driveway will put alot less stress on you tranny. JC

Not sure what tranny is in the new trucks but the E4OD trannys have a port in the side for a temp sensor...1/8" NPT IIRC...

I have a AutoMeter in my truck.

The total cost was $500. $200 for transmission cooler, $100 for installation and $200 for the transmission service, which included all new fluid, pan gasket and filter.

By popular demand I will get a gauge installed before I make the next loaded run.
