I have a snapper with a 14hp Kohler with alt, no start (rope start)
I have gone thru the wiring...can't find the break or short cutting the 12v needed for the electric clutch so I want to direct wire it from the 12v rectifier to the clutch with a simple on off two pole switch

how does one do this...and where do I put the inline fuse

can someone send me a diagram or send me a link that might help
I don't want to fry the rectifier of the clutch so I wanna get it right first time
the rectifier has three wire 2 white 1 black I assume the black is the positive

TIA

Do you have an Electro clutch that doesn't want to engage? I was going to rewire on on my JD 318 fearing electricl problems, and it turned out to be a simple air-gap adjustment. Sorry if I'm way off base. ~Scotty

it's not getting enough voltage...but where and how do I check for that
air gap...I thought these are factory set and not adjustable..

I'm not a newbie at machinery....but I'm stumped on this one
hate seeing machine not earning

Check the amp draw, as they age sometimes the windings will short out and they start to pull more. Had one on the neighbors John Deere 420 pulling over 30 amps when it is suppossed to pull 7 amps. Also air gap needs to stay adjusted or they will pull more as it gets larger. Some clutches you can just buy the magnet for and not the whole thing, was $300 for the Deere one.

Do you have a battery in this unit?

it has a rectifier that gives the voltage...no on board battery needed since it's rope start...just this unit has so many dead man nuetral safety crap...I wanted to direct wire it from rectifier to a switch to the clutch when I put a battery on the clutch itself....loud firm engage so clutch is good...it's amperage/voltage along the routing of the harness via them safety and who knows what else
funny thnig I might have some toro walker manuals somewhere maybe it can help they use a simuliar setup no battery just alt and switch to clutch....but I do want to protect the rectifier from back looping some how,,,,,,,,,anyway you could draw me a jerry rig diagram of a straight wire connection if so please do

A lot of equipment will not work without a battery, the alternator does not have enough amps to pull it in alone.

I would follow the wire fron the clutch back through all the safty swithes, [that are their for a reason] and tee off from their, as that is were it's getting it's power from.

I'll try that route first I'll make some jumper wires the safety switches are for the hydros so they start in neutral only as you know hydros are hard to stop
it's a good machine...and can be a good earner if the blades turn that is is...now it's a glorified Garden Cart or boat trailer dolly

In all probability the two white are the output from the coil windings (12v ac). Then the black is the+ DC output from the rectifier which will have a grounded body. Try it with a digital meter to be sure.( Most digitals won't read AC if they are set on the DC scale.)
Stick the pigtail fuse on the black output, then run to a toggle switch and then to the coil on the clutch. Does the clutch have one or two wires coming from it? If one, then you are all set, if two then you will have to ground one. (it might make a difference which one you ground)
