Check out what else we need to be careful of when hunting out in the woods down here in Florida!

TALLAHASSEE, Florida, July 31, 2009 (ENS) - A Burmese python measuring 17 feet in length was caught and destroyed on private property in Okeechobee County Thursday afternoon.

Captured on the grounds of the Okeechobee Veterinary Hospital, the male snake weighed 207 pounds, and measured 26 inches in diameter....

I haven't heard of that going on in my neck of the woods but it did happen in the spillway just outside new orleans and in easetern new orleans, which are both over 2 hours from me. The ones in eastern new orleans wound up in city park right after Katrina.

I used to know some hog hunters that would catch Russian boar mixed hogs with dogs in New Orleans east and relocate them to the Bonne Carre' spillway. This was a sophisticated operation with a spotter in a helicopter and ground crews.

I had a shop that backed up to the Mississippi River levee in Kenner, 15 miles south of the spillway, and one day after they released 20 hogs in the spillway, I spotted 2 of them on the levee behind my shop heading east, back towards home about 40 miles away. I doubt that they made it.

I was watching Wild Russia last night and the Siberian segment talked about how the Russian Boar has adapted to winter, apparently they can root through all the snow and ice. Guess the southern states might not be the only ones with wild boar problems with Russian Boar bloodlines running around.

Nice to hear you are donating the meat Deerefan... something always in short supply at foodbanks... and glad to hear you are OK.

Have you ever tried to donate a fresh killed hog to a food bank?

Really doubt they would take it even if it had been processed. Really sure they aren't going to come out and pick it up and take it for processing.

Many may disagree with me on this but ferel hogs should be eradicated by any means possible and I won't waste the time to process them at all.

I pick the skulls up after the ants clean 'em up.

Since we don't have wild hogs here, no. However they do take donations of other animals (cows etc.) and have arrangements with local butchers to process the animals. You just drop it off at the butcher and that's it.

Oh, and I am talking about the main state distribution foodbank, not your local 'pantry' type foodbank.

Some tour guide wanna be near hear built a hog pen from rail road ties. Then the experimented with letting hogs go feral. I turned him down 3 times on building pipe traps to catch them down in LA and he and anothe fella built some. Now they have been breeding and releasing them on one side of the waterway. They cross the 30 hwy bridge to this side. I had a friend hit a 250 sow in a sharp Ford Ranchero and killed the hog and the Falcon. Hes made it a mission to erradicate them to. The Waterway maintenance crews say theve destroyed tons of the slopes and game managment areas. They also have knocked a huge dent into the restablishment of the wild turkey population by eating the eggs. I hate them myself I had some corn destroyed by a sow we killed later on.
Ridge walker I d sure be wigglin and squealing to if I was getting that surgery done lol.

They began destroying the small retainig levee on forementioned pond. What is even stranger is I spent all weekend in the woods, did not see hide nor hair of them, which is good but very unusual. Maybe, just maybe, it will be quiet for a while!!

The pig encounter I had was at the Dupuis State Forest which is only a few miles south east of Okeechobee. Maybe I was nervous about the pig and the big snake!

I wonder if Eddie clicked on the link? :D:D:D:D

Later,
Dan

Dan, my waist is only 34", I believe I will be carrying a backup pistol (SIG P226 in .357SIG) with me whilst hog hunting from now on!

I saw parts of the Animal Planet special Pig Bomb I think it was called. It showed random hog attack on people and how they were finding more attacks on humans from the russian hogs. A frinad of mine was pulling a Rome disc with a D8 cutting roots and scrub for the timber company and saw a few youngsters huddled up and he plowed them. He told me that his brother a timber cruiser was held up a tree by a few last summer. They are urged to take them out when they see them. Last year about a mile from here a neighbor had a box trap for coyotes. He went to see it and found a 300 pound sow dead in his trap. She had died from heat stroke the game warden thinks.
