...made a little girls first trip to the deercamp with daddy, something to remember!

Everytime I head off to the deercamp for a weekend, my little girls always tell daddy to "shoot a giant hog!". Well, this time, I asked my oldest daughter Kaylie (5 years old), if she wanted to go with daddy to the deercamp for a weekend. That little girl was so excited, I think she started packing on Monday and just kept checking and doublechecking every evening there after.

On Friday morning, she was up bright and early and had all her gear loaded in the truck by 7AM. We made the 4.5 hour drive to Mason, TX, stopping at places of interest along the way. This included a roadside picnic at the geographical center of Texas, between Brownswood and Brady.

We went out and sat in the deerblind at 6pm. By about 8pm, she was starting to get antsy. You can only recite the alphabet, planets, oceans, continents, presidents and count to 100 for so long, before it starts to loose it's luster. We counted the turkeys and the deer and watched them with our binoculars, while we waited for the pigs.

Anyways, right at 8:05, the pigs arrived. We watched them for a little bit and then she asked me to pick out a good one and shoot it. Daddy picked one out and dropped it. We high-fived and walked out to see our pig.

Mission accomplished, the next generation hunter has just been bit by the outdoor bug and both daddy and daughter had smiles we couldn't wipe off.

On a side note:
I'll post another thread about a little 22 bolt rifle I bought her. It's really a nice little rifle for a kid to start plinking with.

Well, the pig is cool, but your daughter is precious. She's a sweety for sure. I know you are very proud, Gordon.:)

Yessir, that is a cute little girl. And I can tell you that the little .22 rifle Gordon mentioned is a cute little gun, too.:D I hadn't shot a gun in 5 years, so I went to a public gun range this morning to play with my old revolvers, and arriving at about the same time was Gordon (gsganzer) to sight in that little rifle.:D

Is that the little pig who went to market?:D

JC,

I just checked the picture, well,,,I guess that little piggy was the one who took the "wrong turn at Albuquerque".. I reckon:eek:.

He won't make that mistake no more.

Great pic, I wished I had a little cute girl as well, My wife and I tried it 4 times and got boy every time. Can't blame it on her, it is all my fault. Hopefully, I 'll spoil my future grand daughter.:)

Man that is such a good memory made. I have to say that is real quality time. She is a beautiful little girl take good care of her, she will grow up faster than you can imagine. My daughter is heading of to college this fall and I still see her as that age.

Great thread! I've got to say enjoy every moment. Seems like yesterday my daughters were the same age. One's living the big city life in Dallas with a good job and the other is married and going to college in Abilene. Keep up the good times and we're looking forward to the new plinker thread.

I saw an interesting show on the animal channel last night regarding how wild hogs are gaining territory, looks like we'll all be shooting them soon.

Toad,
In the 4 years I've been on our lease in Mason, TX I've watched the hog population multiply. You don't realize how many pigs you have until you put up a game camera. What we thought were a few pigs, turned out to be dozens coming to the feeders at night. I wonder about concerns of the possibility of a hog disease going pandemic through entire regions. I wear latex gloves when I skin them, just to protect myself. The land owner has trapped over 80 this year. We've shot another 20 and I still don't think we dented the population.

I've been catching pictures of a huge solitary boar coming to my feeder at about 12AM. I'll have to keep my sorry butt awake some night and see if I can get him. Too big to eat, but he probably has some nice tusks. For eating, I like the ones that are about 75 pounds. I skin them and cut them in half down the back bone. Put each half in a cooler with ice for about 3 days (keep the meat up out of the water). Then brine them with a salt and brown sugar mix overnight. The next day, rub it down with pork rub, smoke them for about 4 hours and then wrap in foil and go another 4 hours. The meat falls off the bone.

Ganzer, the first one I ever killed up this way was about 50lbs dressed. I did the same thing and halved it and put it on the smoker. Pulled it off the smoker kind of late, sampled it and put the rest in the refrigerator. The next day we got home from work and 4 teenagers had just about cleaned it to the bone! Picture a pack of wolves on a caribou carcass!:D That's probably what it looked like when they found it! Good eatin'!
