Rocks in my hay

I was taking some hay samples and saw this rock in one of my bales. That JD baler will pick up just about anything!

It is kind of amazing sometimes how big a rock or log a baler will pickup and feed into a bale. The old OMC baler that I had in the 80's that had metal drums/rollers instead of belts would sure make some funny noises when you would get something like that in it while you were tying off a bale.

I wished the guy who bales my hay would wrap it that well.

I'd charge extra for that.

Most often those rocks are rolled up by the rake and supported by some hay in the windrow. Try running the rake a little lighter.

It could have been a skunk. I seem to get a few snakes a year in square bales.

I tightened it up some and it started balling up.

The rock situation is getting better as the grass spreads.

I know I've baled my fair share of fence posts! 4-5" posts don't even make a sound going through. I used to bale on islands that flood every spring and get covered in driftwood and logs. Lots of sticks in bales there!

We've found that the rotary rakes don't add rocks and sticks into the windrows as well as the older style rakes with the reels that tend to rope the hay.

We learned this from haylage as the chopper knives don't seem to hold an edge as well with the steady injestion of rocks and stuff found in fields.
