One other thing, if you have the other shaft assembly loose take it in to see what parts you need. In most cases these U joints are symetrical, measure it to be sure. You should be able to remove the old caps in place to be sure you get the right size.

I bought a bearcat and love it.

We literally cleared 58 acres. So, I am cleaning the mulch up with the batwing. It has done a great job.

I have asked the chemical folks and they say the nitrogen in the liquid fertilizer really helps break it down in a hurry. Rain and rot will help too.

Well if I was trying to remove the taper pin I would back the nut off about 1 1/2 turns and hit it with a hammer to loosen it without damaging the threads. Then back the nut off the rest of the way and push the pin out. I might add that with a taper fit moving it just a fraction of an inch will loosen it.

That probably won't work. The pin is a tapered fit, and the nut is most likely a self locking nut. Unseating the taper before the nut is completely removed results in the pin turning with the nut and no way to hold it.

Remove the nut and washer if used, then use a brass or other soft punch to unseat and remove the tapered pin.

I would certainly remove the yoke and shaft from the machine to replace the joint if I were doing the job.

Good information, how about removing the locknut and replacing with a standard nut to loosen the pin at least initially? I didn't think most guys here would have a brass punch to work with.

I have brass punches and stuff. I figure I will call one of the JD techs and ask them. They are pretty helpful. Worse case - I pull the yoke off the clutch pack and leave the rest alone.

I'll let you guys know what I find out. I broke that pin last time. It is not very straight forward. I hope 3 is not the charm.

OK I pulled it part. The yoke is toast. The pin came out easy this time.

Just be aware that the cap of that is loosely but attached to the actual pin. So, you loose the nut until it tightens back up some. Then tap on the other end of the pin.

I pulled it out and the yoke on the clutch is toast.

So, a new yoke and a couple new u joints are in order. I could just put one in, but I have it apart.

I am planning on putting anti-seize on the actual pin and lock tight on the nut. It looks like it had blue on there.

I have to get a new dipstick for the power splitter - the top got knocked off when the shields were getting knocked around. I should have it back going in no time. No big hurry - I need to bale hay next week. I just can not leave equipment laying around broken.
