I have recently retired from Massachusetts to Arizona and have researched a lot on ATV's and UTV's and am considering the Polaris Sportsmen since I am close to several National Parks, but not sure that the Sportsmen is able to use all the attachments that I think I'm going to need. I'm hoping I could rent some of the attachments like a post hole digger.

I have a Polaris Sportsman. I use it for pushing snow, pulling a tine harrow, and winching out my 1,200# riding tractor when my wife gets it stuck. I have a 12V sprayer that I use to spray fence lines. The Sportsman's are about the heaviest ATV made. Mine weighs 770#. Weight can be good or bad in an ATV depending one's preferences. I do know my Sportsman is a snow pushing beast with no chains on it. Do they make a post hole digger for an ATV?

I highly doubt it. If it bound up you'd have a real problem...No 3 point anyway.

So far so good, but not clear on timswi's comment "no three point". Whistlepig makes me confident that the sportsmen could do "almost" everything" I was hoping for it to do. My land is 5 acres of scrub brush and small mesquites along with large crushed stone driveways. I thought about a tractor, but want an ATV for hunting and exploring and hoped to get away with one big expense.
Thanks,

Lacal, the "three point" he refers too is a three point hitch, usually on a tractor, the post hole digger would attach to that, I've never seen one on an ATV.

harvey7 - thanks! I pretty much figured that's what it meant. I just want to be careful I don't look like Mr. Douglas on Green Acres. All new to me, but certainly looking forward to it. I haven't done farm work in forty-five years and sure am glad to be out of the city.

I have 2006 700 cc Sportsman. I bought it prior to my tractor. I have used it with a small trailer I bought to haul it one and then hook it to 4 wheeler to haul rocks, wood etc. Where I am you gotta be careful not to put too much weight on the trailer and go down a hill. While the Sportsman is pretty heavy and has engine braking a heavy trailer load and down hill can lead to the trailer jack knifing as the Polaris is not heavy enough to 'stick' to the ground. I have had the trailer jack knife the 4 wheeler and the 4 wheeler tires where not turning, trailer was pushing.
I have used a 12volt sprayer and used a winch to pull logs again some limit by the weight of the 4 wheeler. I eventually got a tractor and it does so much more.

First, thanks for the responses. It sounds like I need one of each now I just need to convince my wife.

You might want to look into a Tool Cat. They can operate a post hole digger. More money but may be what you realy are looking for.

Sorry about the terminology lacal, But the responses on the 3 point are correct. An atv wont handle a post hole digger, nor should it. Too small for something that has that much torque. If the digger bound up, the atv would end up flipped over:eek:

The Sporstman is a great ATV. My neighbor has a 700 2 up. It rides and drives like a Cadillac and is capable of all kinds of work...Pulling, plowing etc.

Look at a Ranger as well..They have even more utility if you have enough acres to get enough use out of it. They are pretty big, but a really nice machine. I like everything about them except the overall size...Too big for me.

The Tool Cat is a killer machine but 30 large is a bit much.
