cb or Palmetto: Im just curious, but How big was this job? Under $1000 doesnt sound like much run time for a mulcher? or is these bids multiples of 1000 (ie:$315000 as the winning bid)?

Cool. Thanks for the info.

Mulching business must be getting slow if the guy bid that low? Or is he just a lowballer running junk?

The stuff is like a jungle! I have been working out here in NM for almost 2 years now and I have seen about 4 contractors come out here and make those low bids. They are no longer in business and I am buying new machines. The government contracting officers are pretty smart and very experinced. They will not award the contract to a very low bid if they think that the contractor can not perform. There is a contract out here in that the guy bid to low and now is in bankruptcy. They asked me if I could pick it up (almost 400 acres of 450 left) and I refused. Our machines are very expensive to run and maintain, I will get a salary job before I will work for free. There has to be profit in a job or you will be just like the others. There is a reason why I have cleared over 650 acres just this year and I just got another 800, I am not the lowest bidder but I am more often than not the "best value to the government."

315 per acre is insane, I wouldn't even get out of bed in the morning for that I can understand that things are slow but what ever I guess, that contractor will not be around for long at those prices. Anything under 500 is not worth it. Just my 0.02 but I think most will say the same.

The new pts have over a five hundred hours a piece with no problems yet just wish we could find a tooth that would last

try an Iron Wolf head. They use bandit teeth. From my last 10 months of dealing with finding the right tooth manufactor to use kennametal is it. They last the longest but are hard to put on, need impact to change.
