Counter rotating tillers break up the soil with less number of passes and do a superb job. However!!! If you have rocks in the ground I would advise against it. The tines might (will) pick up the rocks and bang them against the top cover of the tiller and get wedged in there. My walk-behind tiller has a forward and counter rotating option. I tried the counter rotating option and broke a shear pin every 20-30 ft of tilling. With forward rotation I might break one pin per season. So. guess which one I use all the time. My garden is full of rocks even after years of picking them after tilling.

I have a 53" Yanmar tiller that I run with my B7610, which is 24HP(engine), 18HP PTO. It doesn't even seem to notice the load at all, and that is tilling to full depth in clay/shale. I did take it pretty slow, to make it till it finely.

You'll be fine with your BX2230 and a 48" tiller. 48" is only about 16% wider than 42" Even if it was too much, you could still run it, just with a little less forward speed.

Hi,
I'm new to this forum and was wondering if anyone has any insight as to Roto-tiller width selection goes for BX 2230.It is about 44" wide at the tires. My dealer recomends a 42"width tiller. This seems to me it will leave tire tracks.I was wondering if this tractor has sufficient power to run a 48"width.It is a spendy impliment and I want to be sure I purchase the correct width. Thanks for all your expertise.

Hello Scotty
I use a First Choice 44" tiller which works well for my BX 1830
1 covers my tracks
2 doesn't sap my power
3 makes a very nice bed
I run turf tires and have had no problems
Mine has a slip clutch that need adjusting before use but that is easy to do
No need for shear pins

tons of threads on this. do a search.

my 54" runs fine behind my bx24, but i did find i need to run it with the FEL in place or the front is VERY light. light to the point i loose steerage and have easily popped the front off the ground in heavy dirt.

don't go heavier and wider than needed or you start to sacrifice turning radius via the FEL or other front weight needed to be in place for safe operation.

I have only a 40" behind my 2350 and the wheel tracks are covered do to the fact that there are no side covers. But I only have around $40 and some time invested.:D It has forward rotation do to the heavy rocks hear in the granite state! I had a walk behind until that was counter rotating and I found the wrong size rock. The forward tiller will be more prone to jump over the rock instead of pull it into the unit. Now I also use my homemade ripper first on virgin tills.

I have a BX1860...I have a phoenix 48" for it. I have plowed up roughly 3-4 acres with no problems. I have about 1 ac that has not been cultivated in over 80 years. I had no probs with plowing it up other than tree roots...it nearly jerked me off the tractor and still did not stall it .... I would think the 54" would work good for yours. I like the phoenix tiller and will recommend it to anyone looking to buy. I would like to have a counter rotating tiller but they are much more $$$$ than I can spend so I will stay with the Phoenix.
Good Luck! Tim

My 15 HP BX1500 handles the 48'' KK tiller real fine.
Easly covers my tracks .
Don't soak up the BX1500s power and the BX23 has more than enough HP to run the 48'' tiller .

Yesterday at the local Fleet Farm they had the KK 48in on sale for $999. It's been tugging on me to get one,It's even the same color as my BX. Have to control myself couse I just can't justify it for about one eighth acre garden. Have an old Simplicity 728 with tiller on back. Still works,I guess thats good for now. Seen some older John Deeres,Cubs, and case tractors on craigs that look nice for a lot less than a new 3pt.

I thought 1099 was a good deal on my 48'' kk :)
