used to wear a boonie hat when kayaking and working in the yard. One day I went kayaking on a very large local lake that is used as a water supply for several local cities/counties as well as flood control. The route I went kayaking this particular day was 10 miles north and then 10 miles back which would take about 5 hours including rest breaks.
The problem was that a sewer plant north of the lake had a failure and millions of gallons of "stuff" had escaped earlier in the week.
The TV news was stating it was safe to be in the lake. Hmmmm. After the first 2-3 miles I went from one "pool" of the lake into another "pool" where I normally paddle the west side of the lake. As I got closer to the west side I noticed foam in the water. Boats and high wind will sometimes do this but it was a lot of foam. Not many boats. Very light wind. Then I noticed the foam was tinted brown. Then I saw, well, STUFF in the water. Large basketball sized stuff.
By this time I had moved from my fast paddling pace which splashes a bit of water to a low and slow paddling style that does not splash much water.
But the boonie hat had already collected some water.
There were people swimming and water sking that day but the news was saying the water was safe. Tain't no way that water was safe to be in.
The boonie hat I wore that day got thrown in the back of the truck to let the UV from the sun do its stuff. But I never could wear that hat again. I bought a Tilley to replace the boonie hat I
used to wear.
