Have you ever tilled a driveway

I have tilled driveways many times, but with a howard rotavator, with a slip clutch set very loose. It works very with a box blade & roller to redo driveways but watch out for cable tv & phone line Call for locates first.

ive run mine down the center, knock off the high ridge full of weeds.

i only took off about an 1" across 3' or so. (tapering toward the edges)

really no diffrent than trying to till 4" of hard ground which im shure some of us have done more than once.

My 400 lb box blades 4 rippers bounce off of my driveway like it's concrete when it's been dry. I have to go slow untill it's well broken up. A tiller wouldn't stand a chance. After a rain it would be different though. I still wouldn't put my tiller through it as it would eat up tines like crazy.

johntab, where did you get the idea to put pea gravel on a driveway? To me, it sounds like it would be almost impossible to get round rock to tamp down, and stay in place. I wouldn't want any round rocks of any size in a road bed or as a topper.

The gravel isn't round- perhaps the term is regional for what I have on the driveway. The crushed limestone gravel is the smallest size they have, one size bigger than stone dust.

It compacts very well and is almost as smooth as asphalt.

Around here, pea gravel is the smallest stuff that is not crushed. It's whole pebbles that are actually about the size of a pea.

Of course there's the age old answer to the question of "what's the difference between crushed rock and pea gravel?"

..."Anybody can crush rock."

I would like to see pictures of someone using a landscape rake on their gravel driveway. I have a rake that I use very little. I have never thought of using it on the driveway?
