G'Day all !!

I am looking to fence a property in post n rail and am looking for some advice regarding the recommended materials and most cost effective avenues to purchase.

The total distance will be approx 5 km (3 miles)

I have been advised:
a) the desired height of the fence is 5 foot up and 2 foot down (7 foot posts) at 8 foot spacings.

b) use 8 X 2 inch rails (2 rails along the fence)

All in treated pine.

I am in Australia and if I can source a bulk supplier I will then cost a few containers loads for export.

Thanks in advance...

I can't help you with the fence but would sure like to see a picture of your place. Three miles of ground ready for fence would be something I have never seen.

$30k may sound a lot but by comparison to local prices it may not be so bad after all...

Are there any LARGE scale supplier whom could be recommended?

With all do respect what the heck are you fencing in? (or out). The only large scale supplier of fence I know of in the USA is Tractor Supply. Years ago I bought from local country fence suppliers but they can not compete with Tractor Supply anymore because of the volume that Tractor Supply buys. Maybe something better in the western United States where they are fencing in a zillion miles at a time. Here in Ohio Tractor Supply is the best place to buy.

I know of 2 'mom-n-pop' type suppliers that obliterate tractor supply prices when you are talking about bulk purchases. both have acers of land covered with bunbled posts and boards by the thousands... tsc is a drop inthe bucket compaired to their inventory.

I'd wager there are plenty of other lumber supplieres that beat tsc as well.

New Zealand might be a better option than USA. They have mountains of pine products, including treated pine at considerably less cost than local. And shipping should be considerably less given the distance involved.

You will have to pay import duty and GST no matter where you source it from.

Have you considered using hardwood sourced from the property you are fencing? There are blokes who will cut it into posts/rails and charge a rate per each.

Where abouts are you located? Australia doesn't really narrow it down :)

have to agree with above,.. look in local yellow pages for treated pine timber yards, better still to go directly to lumbers and get exactly what size you want cut as per special order (they love special orders). Treated pine wont get eaten out by termites but it will still burn, crack and warp. The craziest bull can still break it,. OZ local grown treated timber will be cheaper than importing the stuff. R u any good at welding? Have u considered steel tubing seconds in bulk, it never gets white ants, rots, OR burnt in fire, and you will find its compareable in price to pine, but needs less maintenance. just a thought.
