Retread Truck Tires?

Does anyone run retreaded tires on there pickups?

They would be going on a F350 PSD plow truck and will be running at or near max load regularly.

I had this tire in mind.

Yes, I know where the rubber strips come from. LOL

Is it an issue to run them on the steer axle? If I can't run these on all four corners I probably won't bother with them at all.

It is illegal to run front axle caps in some states for commercial applications. Personally, I would not even consider it on the front for any highway application legal or otherwise.

FWIW, I would not give you ten cents for a hotcap but I put a good many miles on cold caps (Bandag's) with nary an issue.

Its only school busses that cant run recaps on the stears.

Gators come from underinflated tires, not recaps.

I don't know the different recap technologies, but I'd feal safe running modern recaps unless you are giving them LOTS of side load, like the 8 axle steel hauler trailers we have in MI.

I believe there is a recap ascociation out there on the web someware.

New Jersey is one state that bans caps on the front for trucks.

I don't know the exact process but if I believe that the hotcaps are just that, glued on and cured under heat and pressure. You can always tell a hotcap by the way it wraps covers some of the sidewall.

Cold caps look like just a tread width band of rubber glued to the outside of the tire. I do not know if the process uses any heat at all. I only know of the brand name Bandag for this process, there may be others. The casings were usually Michilin that started out being on the front axle.

Reading over the info on the site that you provided, it looks to be close to the Bandag but I would call them if you have any questions.

Years ago, heat processed recaps were a very common thing for all vehicles. With proper care, you could cap the same tire a couple of times with no issues.

Not a truck, but i run retread snows on my car in the winter. They are excellent. Hold air well,no cracks and wear like iron. Plus there made local Quality Products - Eastern Tire Service Ltd.

I think you'll find those big pieces of truck tires did NOT come from retreads.

It's been many, many years since I ran retreads on a 1956 Mercury Montclair convertible and a 1957 Studebaker Silver Hawk (never had a problem with any of them), but the only reason I'm not running retreads now is because I haven't found any that would save me any money.

When I use to drive a tractor trailer and another trucker saw a big piece of 'retread' that was laying in the road, they would warn you on the CB... And we called the retreads "alligators."

Yea those big pieces of truck tires laying in the roads are from "retreads."
