I was perusing the wares at TSC, browsing amid the various hydraulic hose fittings, when I happened upon a variation in fittings that I do not comprehend.

Please have a look.

Standard male pipe thread :

Swivel Adapter, 3/8 in. Male Pipe x 3/8 in. Female Pipe Swivel - 1818503 | Tractor Supply Company

Restricted male pipe thread :

Swivel Adapter, 3/8 in. Restricted Male Pipe x 3/8 in. Female Pipe Swivel - 1818147 | Tractor Supply Company

To my eye, they both appear the same.

What makes a male pipe thread "restricted" and how would one recognize which he had on any random hose assembly ??

I have been messing with NPT all of my life and never before knew such an animal existed.

Thanks.:)

The comparison is looking at group A and group W .

Group W has a restricted orifice.

There is an R in the part number. R = Restricted orifice.

If you look into the swivel, you will see the difference.

They only swivel until you tighten them.

The part number is explained on page 2.

Thanks J J

I guess the restricted orifice would be to slow down the movement, right ??

Thanks.:)

Please forgive my ignorance; I only know enough to get me in trouble.

The loader on my tractor has fourteen hoses, several of which are all the same length.

I can take the hoses into town, one at a time, as they fail, and just let the hose making guy at the auto-parts worry about what kind of ends etc. they require, then take the new hose back home and screw it on.

Having been working around tractors, dozers, back-hoes, dump-trucks, big hoes, etc. etc., all of my life, I have taken many many hoses to that guy over the years.

I had one hose burst on my little tractor and had him make a new one.

Then, I get to exploring around the TSC site and I find that I can buy THREE complete ready-made hoses, plus swivels, for less than I paid to have the one hose custom-made.

There being fourteen hoses and thirteen headed South, this kinda got me in the notion to head to TSC and stock up on hoses.

My question is :

When I buy the swivels, do I need the standard ones or the "restricted" ones ??

Or, will some be restricted and others plain ??

I can see no markings, notches, etc. on the current swivels, but that may change when I actually get one off where I can clean it up and check it out.

Thanks.

If you can see the part numbers, go from there. If you have a 1/2 in hose, look into the swivel fitting and see if it is about 1/2. They only use restricted fittings to slow down fluid. There are other ways to slow down fluid also. You need to tell the hose guy what you want, or show him the hose you want replaced, and he should come up with the same hose and fittings.

bk, i would not use restricited fittings on a loader. if you have a harbor freight near you, they also sell premade, NPT hoses at good prices.

i agree that custom made hoses are rediculously expensive. we have a hose shop where i work, and sell/make many hoses each day. we charge $12 labor per hose, the labor really is about 3 minutes. add the cost of the hose, plus the fittings, it gets expensive quick. last winter i made all new hoses for my truck's snowplow (the kind w/the engine driven pump under the hood). cost of material for 7 hoses was $71, all fittings were swivels. one hose for, say a skidsteer's front mounted angle blade, can easily cost as much to the general public.
