This is my first post here. I have 201 acres of mostly wooded land. I have about 3 acres in pasture. I have about 4 acres in heavy kudzu. There are many roads to maintain through the property.

I will be fighting the kudzu with tractor spraying, bush hogging etc. I hope to use the pto for a chipper/shredder, bush hog, sprayer, post hole auger. I will also use a front end loader on the tractor and also a box blade.

I am going to purchase a new Kubota with a cab. I am looking at the L3940 but wonder if I should go bigger?

Anybody have an opinion?

Congrats on owning 201 acres!!!

Nice to have you here on TBN

The L3940 will be perfect along with the M7040, X500, you will need??

You need to give us some more info about where you live.
Is this going to be your full time home.

Did the word back-hoe ever come up in your converstaion?

Can you get a resonable price on chains. May be 1600' worth to start.

Hi Bugeye & welcome.

I live in the middle of 250 acres (wifes family farm). My understanding is it's about 100 acres/fields the rest is woods.

For some strange reason, they've used an IH 444 with a 5' mower on the back to cut the farm for decades  (took me freaking all summer once to get the place cut)

I stopped cutting it...and now, mysteriously, a 90 HP tractor with a 10' heavy duty Rhino and a ligher duty 15' batwing have shown up...

My personal property in this area is about 2 1/2 acres (in middle of larger farm area) I was bugging the wife about getting a tractor and that is how I found this site.

I was contemplating a B series... then L series... and I ended up getting an industrial backhoe/loader (JCB) with a digging depth of 15 1/2 feet.

My question to you is...

Could you be better off buying an older full sized industrial backhoe/loader and an older larger tractor for the fields & box blade...

I can swear to you on dinner that my JCB has come in VERY handy dandy any number of times over the years.

Now, looking back (and no disrespect meant to owners of smaller machines with loaders & backhoes attached) I'm VERY glad I went this way as when I see brand new Kubota's on my local lot... well... let me just say that I'm VERY grateful that I have an 8' wide bucket on the front, 2' bucket on the rear and can lift something like 6,000 lbs in the front bucket.

Moving downed trees? Moving boulders? Burying old friends that have moved on (pets).... the industrial sized is bigger, easier & smoother than any of the smaller type that I've used/rented.

Just trying to throw a different perspective out for you.

Good luck with your research & decisioni

I have a L4240HST. I started looking at the L3240 and decided to move up to the L4240 to get the larger loader, LA854. I also got the backhoe and Bush Hog Squealer rotary cutter with the tractor financing. I work on 120 acres, but as you state you have there are only a few acres in fields. There is a lot of work on hills and in and around trees. I find the L4240 HST to be a very good tool, of course you will learn to use and like whatever you get. I use the back hoe to dig out trees, rocks, stumps, install culverts, remove bushes. Loader and grapple make great work on brush and rocks. the HST helps moving in and around trees and on hills. If you could move up one size and get the larger loader I would suggest it. As most will tell you get all the HP you can afford but make sure you get some implements to help you with your work.
Good Luck

Welcome aboard!

We all have opnions, what you will have to sort thru is what is meaningful to you.

I've got about 300 acres in NE MS and was looking to retire there next year, but SWMBO has delayed that, But I just went thru the decision process.

First decide if you have any extreme limiting factors - for example will you have to transport the tractor? If so you might want to make sure your entire package is within a weight limit.

Do you have s shed with a door that it's got to fit thru?

Will you have to dig holes with a backhoe? A lot of machines don't operate a cab and a backhoe.

I know for my land I'm probably going to need about 50hp, but the little ride I got will get me started.

Also look at the dealerships in your area - good dealer support may be critical.

And as far as kudzu - two solutions - a small tactical nuke or a goat ranch.

Welcome Bugeye. I'll bet you are in the South somewhere. Good luck with the kudzu, it is terrible stuff to get rid of, I know. You may want to talk to your ag extension agent. There are some spraying programs that help with kudzu but it is a multi year mission.

Sounds to me like you are looking at a good size tractor for what you describe. It is large enough to run a 6' rotary mower and has plenty of power for the other tasks you list.

Talk to several people and you might look at the m series kubota. I have a m4900 4x4 and it is bulletproof. Plenty of power and still small enough to be nimble. The only problem with kubotas are that they are a little light. This can be fixed by filling your tires.
