Glad to hear that everything is well... I am puzzled as to how the google toolbar could cause a bluescreen, I would have bet on updated drivers porking something up...

there's actually a article on it in the microsoft knowledgebase.. as soon as I read it I knew it was the issue. after installing ie8 from a clean format I was going along installing all my archived software.. including thegoogle 2.x toolbar file.. and ie8 warned me it would cause a crash and disabled it before loading... I had it on the ie 6 as an add on.. my guess is that when I installed ie8 the first time.. it for some reason did not disable it, and when windows booted and ie was loading up.. it porked everything up... the article has 3 fix options.. one, manually remove the addon, 2, disable the addon, or 3, get a new version.. even has a link to the new version.. which is how i downloaded the new one.. right from the microsoft site..e tc... so apaprrently it is a well documentd but no publicised issue.. unfortunately ie8 doesn't do a good job of finding it or disabling it on a machine that probably had plenty of addons ..like my mavhine that's been on the same installsince 04 or 05..

I was wondering if after installing IE8 on top of IE6 if you noticed any difference on the font size on TBN?

I like the large font on IE6 and when I installed IE8 using XP no matter what I tried the font size on TBN is always small and difficult for me to see.

I'm no computer expert but my wife is and she says it has something to do with TBN?

So, could you have repaired it without wiping the drive?

can't say.. since i went from ie6 to no cpu for 2 days and then came back up and immediatly put ie8 on it.. when i came up I was under generic vga video drivers as I had repalced the video card in the computer.. and the oem compaq driver didn't like it... once I got ie8 up and was sure it was going to work.. I then got the correct video driver and got out of the 4-bit 16 color compatibility mode!

what about enlarging the font with the mouse wheel?

yes and no.. Yes, I guess I could have headed the whole deal off at the pass by removing google toolbar BEFORE I installed IE8..and then there would have been no issue.. once ie 8 instaleld and google tool bar was there and for some reason ie8 didn't catch it and disable it.. that's when the sky fell... there were no 'recovery' instructions on that article.. guess they figured ie8 would -ALWAYS- detect the incompatible google toolbar and disable it *BEFORE* problems occured... guess I just 'got lucky' and it missed it on my install.

in the end.. the pc is running faster than ever.. I saved probably 99% of the stuf I had archived and use day to day.. might have lost a few things here and there.. but nothing that I can actually remember that I used any mor ethan 1-2x per year. I got ie 8.. got most of the software I use back installed.. sans a few games I havn't played in 1-2 ys.. got my pda back up.. though did have to pay 3$ to redownload some software... no biggie I guess.. did have a bunch more grey hairs pop out.. and did have a huge headache for a while though!!

I realize it's after the fact but this issue most likely could have been resolved without formatting...

the page fault stop erorr would have (with some searching) lead to the conclusion that it was the tool bar that was causing the problem...

The tool bar (executable) could have been removed or renamed with the use of a bootable Live CD which would have prevented Windows from trying to load it...problem solved...

[side note] as I previously mentioned...I always recommend that Windows users keep a Live CD handy... not only can it be used to recover data it can be handy for many other uses...

Those not familiar with a 'Live CD'...it is a complete desktop workstation operating system that runs from the CD and a ramdisk that it creates using the extended system memory...it writes nothing to the hard drive and leaves nothing behind...it will allow the use of a computer that does not even have a hard drive installed...

Example...say Windows crashes for whatever reason...pop in the Live CD and in a couple of minutes you will have complete working desktop workstation...complete with web browser, e-mail and much more application software than comes with most retail Windows systems...if there is an Ethernet or Wireless connection available it will already be connected and working (no need to load any drivers etc)...everything works right out of the box.

[another example] say your Windows system becomes so infected with malicious softwre it can't be used (viruses. trojans, malware etc..) you can use a Live CD to run an AV scan and remove the offending software

Anyone that has never experienced a Live (Linux) CD will be amazed IMO...(some may never go back to Windows)

[some Linux background Info)

There are many different versions (distributions) of Linux...many (but not all) offer "Live CD" editions...All are free to download ...
The easiest way to obtain one is to download the disk image (ISO) and burn it to a CD (or DVD)...if you do not want to bother burning your own CD...most of the distributors will mail you one for $1-$2...for more information visit DistroWatch.com: Put the fun back into computing. Use Linux

if anyone would like more detailed information post a specific request or PM me...I will be happy to recommend a particular "flavor" of Linux that will best suit your needs...

I can also explain how to make your own bootable Live CD that you cary with you, that you can put in just about any computer anywhere...and when it's booted you will have your own customized desktop...with all your data, web favorites/bookmarks...as well as all your e-mail settings etc...it is like taking your whole computer anywhere you go on a CD/DVD or even a USB flash drive ...

Had the same problem and IE8 will now not allow me to reinstall it. I have switched to Maxthon browser. I didn't think I would like it after using IE for all these years, but it is now the one I'll stick with.

in looking back.. had I know it was the google toolbar.. I probably could have made a boot to command line prompt.. found the file and renamed it to prevent the load.. but for some reason it was hnging so bad that it was triggering reboots that I so far.. was unable to find a way to turn off.. I thought I had the bios set to stop on critical errors.. and yet it still rebooted... must be a bad conflict whatever google2.x does to ie8.

in the end.. it cost me a few grey hairs.. some blood pressure points.. about 10hrs lost time.. 3$ worth of downloads .. and now I have a faster cleaner machine with 99% of my software back.. I can live with that..

thanks to all for the very helpfull info.

ps.. I found out where to turn the file extensions on.. thanks!
