Quick question, anyone have a formula to determine the volume of rectangle tubing?
I have some pieces of 6" X 4" X 3/16 wall steel tubing (O.D.) that I want to use as an oil reservoir. I can't seem to find anything to determine the volume in gallons per ft.

Someone check me but is it 1.0591792 Gals/foot? same as woodchuckcanuck two posts below!!!

Edit: I love the "edit" feature, where you can go back and "fix" things... I'll try and check it again.

Edit (again): Ah, two walls, duh! 1.059 gals... so, yea... about a gallon!!! :D

L = 4-(3/16+3/16)
L = 3 5/8 = 3.625 inches

W = 6-(3/16+3/16)
W = 5 5/8 = 5.625 inches

Area = 3.625*5.625
Area = 20.390625 inches

Volume per foot of tubing = 20.390625 x 12 inches
Volume per foot of tubing = 244.6875 cubic inches

1 cubic foot is approximately 7.48 gallons (according to wiki link)

1 cubic foot = 1728 cubic inches
Volume per foot of tubing = 0.1416015 cubic feet

Gallons per foot of tubing = 0.1416015 x 7.48 gallons
Gallons per foot of tubing = 1.0591792 gallons (about 1 gallon)

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it. :)

Egon, what was your answer?

Oh I didn't even try and crunch the numbers. Didn't know if it should be Imperial measure, American gallon or Metric??:confused::confused: and I was wearing socks and didn't want to take them off!:eek:

Roughly a gallon per foot. You could have measured off a foot then poured liquid into it until you hit your 1' mark. I don't like to use my brain. My one brain cell left sits in a rocking chair rocking back and forth all day muttering utter nonsense. :confused:

Sounds like me. I just poured bar oil in the gas tank on my chainsaw. I had the saw 180 d turned from how I usually do it. Caught it before I started it.
Then after I filled the bar oil I left the cap off. Could not figuire where all that oil was coming from. Talk about a senior moment.

I left the cap off

I have a tendency to leave the fuel cap off. Irritating when the pants get soaked up with fuel and you have to stop and wash them.:eek::eek:
