How fast with a canopy?

I agree with Builder about the cylinder becoming dry? Kind of a curious statement.

I HAVE heard that it is a good idea to cover the air intake to stop the turbo from spinning on high speed trips so that may be equally true about covering the exhaust on a turbo engine.:)

The NH I'll be picking up is about 650 miles away and on the ROPS it has a fiberglass canopy. Will that hold up OK on the trailer at highway speeds or will it break, or act like a sail, or?

If I put it down will "down" be far enough to get it out of the wind or will it be acting like a big speed brake?

Do I just need to take it all the way off and figure out a way to put it on the trailer safely, or is it collapsible enough to fit into my Suburban (NH TC40D)?

The canopies I'm familiar with are set up to be easy to remove--just two large knobs to unfasten it from the bracket that holds it to the ROPS. Why risk a problem--remove it and put it in your Surburban.

My dealer is 650 miles away from me, I towed my rig home with no problems what so ever. If I was to have problems, then I would be in real trouble, it is not unheard of for the wind to blow at 80+ MPH at my place.

Nice tractor. Nice rig. Can't make out the truck model.

Especially nice: the In n Out Burger place in the strip mall behind you there. Right now I'm jonesing for a #2 with extra onions. Unfortunately, the nearest InOB is 40 miles away in Chico. Oh, well. Maybe next week sometime.

80 mph! Last time we had wind like that we called it Hurricane Rita! :D

Drying out the cylinder- now that you say it like that I agree that I don't understand how that could be an issue either, but keeping water out might be a better reason, although my pipe is on the side anyway.

I was thinking about putting the canopy into the Suburban but being in a "big city" where you have a Harbor Freight, Mike's "warehouse", TSC, an Ag Equipment place and a nice Co-Op...well, that is no longer an option! I should have left a week ago when I still had some money left. :( And room.

Just a thought...

Everyone in this thread is concerned about the structural integrity of their canopy when exposed to aerodynamic loads encountered while trailering at speeds of up to, let's say, 75 mph.

But...

Has anyone thought about the potential guillotine effects during a rollover situation of that same canopy that everyone is concerned about not being able to withstand aerodynamic loads at normal road speeds?

I don't want to activate the Safety Patrol over this for goodness' sake, but, I would think that any canopy that can't withstand the aerodynamic loads imposed by normal trailer transport speeds certainly isn't strong enough to be a safe addition to the tractor's ROPS...

Just my way of looking at it...

What do you all think???

Flusher, the truck is 1988 F250, getting ready to turn 300K miles. I special ordered this truck back in 87. It has been a very good truck for me.

My gosh that grapple is HUGE for the size of the tractor.....but it looks like it would fit nicely on my backhoe. ;):D

Builder, The grapple was not for me, I'm not sure if my little tractor would even pick that thing up, I was delivering it for the dealer, saving him about a 1000 mile round trip. ;)

Not that 80 MPH winds are an everyday occurrence, usually only a few times a year, although I was told that once last year, or maybe it was the year before,  they got up close to 100.
