Any rock bigger than a Fist sized rock a rental ditch witch wont do it, at least for me..Had to a rent a trac Hoe..Got it done real fast and super easy to use..Dont be intimatdated by a back/trachoe they are easy to use cost was $225 for an enture wekened for a mid size yanmar..Witha trac hoe you can move big rocks that are in your trench line also suprosing how strong they are

Have you considered a trencher like a ditch witch? Might be a whole pile faster and cheaper.

Here are some pictures of the work that I did. It took 2.5 hours to dig the 60' long trench 8' deep. This was the best money spent on this project so far.

I know 8' was extream overkill but to be honest it was easy digging and I didn't have to get on and off and measure for the 6' level.

Measure the boom next time and mark it, instead of getting on and off.
Around here, 8" is about all you need for freeze protection, and that is if you are really trying to keep something from freezing, EVER!
