Wayne County Hose,

Perhaps you can answer this question. How does the chain in the forklift interact with the hydraulic cylinder. Does it somehow multiply the lift capability .

I see the hydraulic and chain used on car lift also.

And what is the name of the process where a hydraulic cylinder pushes on a hinged center of two brackets, and caused them to expand in length? Say your cylinder has 18 in stroke, but when it pushes against the 18 in brackets, at the hinged center point, and when fully extended, the brackets have flatted out or opened up to 36 in.

I ask you this because I think you said you worked with forklifts awhile back.

A liner will fix your problem intantly. At the landfill Dad and I run we have situations where we need a dump truck to haul sand or gravel or even soggy blue clay. We first tried a 20 yard container on the roll off trucks butthey dont raise as high as a dump truck because the beds will toauch the ground first. We put a liner in it and it it shoots material aout. When hauling in the fill we leave the gate open and you can loose a half load in a second if you take the slightest hill. We hauled som blue clay off a site at the plant with 2 more Granite macks fitted with vibrators from the factory. Every second load they had the be hand scraped. I hauled all day with out washing or scraping. It costd 1400 to line the whole 22 foot container bottom and sides becaues it was tapered and had to have custom brakets made. But a regualr dump taier should be pretty cheap.

I am not WCH, but as I understand it, the reason for the chain is so that the ram can lift a load the height of its stroke (sort of like a pulley and rope, but the pulley is what moves

Attached is a drawing of how it works in extended and retracted position on a single stage forklift mast.

Thanks Aaron,

So by looking at the diagram, there is not a mechanical advantage. Am I thinking right that the chains are there to counter the weight of the load, and not put stress in the cylinder rod.

The chains are what lifts the load. For comparison, think of a rope with one end tied to a ring in the floor which then passes through a pulley and the other end is tied to a bucket. When you lift the pulley it tightens the rope and raises the bucket. A forklift works the same way.

Yes, I understand that, and the actual push force is at the top of the rollers on top of the hydraulic shaft. The force is applied to the chain, which pulls the forks up.

With the chain, the forks move twice that of the hydraulic ram, but I believe that the lift capacity is half that of just the cylinder.

Another advantage to the chain mechanism is that it allows the forks to extend beyond the bottom of the ram. In a situation like a forklift where the forks have to pick something up off the ground this is essential.

You're right. Think of it as a regular block and tackle. Pull the rope and get the mechanical advantage. If you pull the block, you only have to move the block a little to move a lot of rope. Lots more travel to the chains, but the force of the cylinder is halved. That still would dump a fair amount of bulky stuff.
