GM To Go Months Without Diesel Trucks

A shortage of light- and medium-duty diesel trucks may be looming as chassis manufacturers modify production dates in response to new 2010 emissions regulations.

General Motors in particular already has stopped taking orders for some models and will not produce its new diesel models until May.

Diesel engines built after December 31 must meet the more stringent Environmental Protection agency regulations, which will require new technology that add weight, cost, and complexity to new diesel-powered trucks.

展e have had a surge of orders for diesel-powered vans, GM痴 Dan Tigges, full-size truck product manager, said at the recent Truck Product Conference sponsored by the National Truck Equipment Association. 釘ecause of that, we cut off orders for diesel vans last week. We will build those trucks, probably until early December. After that, we will have a five-month dark period on diesel engines憂anuary through May. After May 24, we will start production with the new diesel engine. These will be 2010 trucks. We will come out with 2011 model year trucks in late August.

The story is much the same for pickups and chassis cabs.

展e anticipate cutting off orders for full-size pickups in late November, Tigges said. 展e will continue to build trucks into the first quarter of 2010 using engines that are still in the pipeline. In January-February, we will be done producing regular cabs and crew cabs. We will then have a three-month dark period during which we will produce no diesel-powered work trucks. We will be back in business with the new engines in May 2010 for regular and crew-cab models.

Those trucks will be 2011 models.

Downtime for heavy-duty extended-cab models will be even longer. These models have been produced at the GM assembly plant in Pontiac, Michigan. However, the company is closing that plant October 1 and will be moving production to Fort Wayne, Indiana.

典hat will impact production during the last quarter of the year, Tigges said. 展e will be back in production of gas models in January. But heavy-duty extended cab pickups with diesels will not be back in the market until July of next year, and the extended cab chassis cab will not be coming back into production.

For full-size vans, production of 2010 models already is in full swing, Tigges said. Production of gasoline-powered models is expected to run without interruption throughout the model year.

I think that there answer to this, is why all the dealerships around here are loaded with diesel trucks, It happened the same way when clinton banned guns. Make new rules, and before they take affect, we are gonna stockpile.

BAD MOVE

No diesel but plenty of gas hmmmm what really is more poluting, start right from refining?

If you want to start at the point of crude being converted, it's a wash. You get more gasoline out of a barrel of oil than you get Diesel. Then you burn the fuel in the engines and with the new Diesels, you get only slightly better mileage per gallon than a gasoline engine with the same loads. And as Diesels have to start meeting stricter emissions requirements, the fuel use and cost are going to rise. That happened long ago with gasoline engines. Diesels are just now starting to feel the hurt. Gasoline engines have had it for 34 years now with cat cons. Diesels only a few years at most. There is a learning curve that the engine makers are having to go thru. You'll start seeing gear ratios in the differentials start dropping and with it load pulling ability to meet the emission specs. Do you know that in California, the exhaust gases coming out of a car can actually be cleaner than the air being taken in. Wait till Diesels get to that point and see what happens to their MPG ratings.

That will be next year.

I thought it took more energy to refine gasoline than it did diesel?

Actually, everyone other than Navistar is saying that fuel economy will improve 6% once the SCR systems come on line, since they can reduce EGR. This next level may not be as bad as everyone imagines.

Wait till Diesels get to that point and see what happens to their MPG ratings.

Cracking it is done for both at the same time. And results in:
Due to the lower densities of many petroleum products, a 42-gallon barrel of crude oil can generate roughly 44 gallons of petroleum products. About 20 gallons of gasoline and 7 gallons of diesel are produced from each barrel of crude oil.

how can 42 gallon barrel yeild 44 gallons of products? I know about nothing of the refining process, they must add things that inturn increase the volume in the batch. This is all that makes sense to me.

If you create lighter products than the crude, volume increases.
Breaking and rearranging the carbon chains allows for the increase.
