Suggestions;need to cut down 1/4" thick steel support

Hi All-

I am wondering how one can go about cutting down these arms. Is their a shop in central NJ anybody can recommend? Anybody locally want to help me out?

Thanks,
Z

If you don't want to do it yourself go to a small steel supply shop that sells structural steel or a small scrap yard that buys metal. They will probably just use the 14" chop saw to wack them off and 45 the corners. It will take them about 5 minutes. You can probably talk them into grinding the radius on the ends also. If you offer to pay cash to an owner operator who is actually doing the work you can probably get it done for $5-$10. In your part of the world it may be $20. People in Jersey aren't greedy but the cost of living there is a lot higher than in rural central Michigan so most things cost more.

If you were my neighbor you could just bring it over and we would have a cup of coffee and we would just get it done.

From the picture it looks like the steel is thicker than 1/4" perhaps more like 1/2"??

Hacksaw with decent blade and a file to clean up is the cheapest way.

4 in grinder with thin metal cutting abrasive blade. You could go by a welding supply store and ask them to demo their plasma cutter on your 3pt legs.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Although I'd really like to go buy a band saw, it sounds like the 4" angle grinder is the way to go. If I can pick one up for under $50 that sounds pretty reasonable to me.

Hopefully I don't loose a finger or an eye. I didn't measure it so it could be 1/2"...

Thanks,

Go buy a 4.5 inch grinder and some cut off wheels.

Ditto, you won't regret having this tool around. They have many uses and aren't expensive. Just use the correct type of wheel for what you are doing. You can cut and grind metal, concrete, bricks, etc.

$5 hacksaw and elbow grease if you have any.

Hello
If there is a Harbor Freight close you might consider a hacksaw and a 4"
angle grinder. It wouldn't take very long and you would still have the tools for
another project.

Awesome ammount of labor everyone is willing to put into this.

I'd simply turn up the arc welder to 200A to cut and be done in 10-15 sec.
