Your wife has never been duck hunting in the marsh where the water was up to the top of your chest waders and the cattails have grown so thick that you can't get through them. I know the water was over four feet deep, but couldn't be sure if it was five feet or deeper in the areas that I couldn't get to.

There is a species of dwarf cattails that is supposed to be limited it how deep it will grow, but I don't know what that depth is. Maybe she's thinking of the dwarf species???

The problem with cattails is that once started, they will keep spreading out and taking over. Then it becomes very dificult to control and get rid of them. While a small patch of them would be ideal in a few places around my pond, the threat of what they will do makes it more important to never have any of them. If and when I find them, it's chemical warfare time!!! LOL

Regarding pond depth, perhaps it is a local issue with the colder temperature, but in Texas and Arkansas, the Ag extension service recommends 8 foot as maximum depth of fish ponds. Any deeper and the oxygen is depleted and fish cant survive there anyway. That according to my searchs. I know some deep water lakes support life much deeper but small ponds dont generally have flowing water in them so the water only gets aeriated by the wind, which according to biologist, only works effectively on the top 4-5 feet or water. I guess if you put in a big pump and aerator you could get the full 12 foot usage.

I can attest from hand-pulling them out by their roots and spraying that cattails have no problem in water four to five feet deep, and I'm 6'2".

Interesting. The Soil & Water people here (Ohio) recommend at least an 8' depth for 50% of the pond. The reason given is that shallow water warms up and encourages aquatic growth.
