Regional Tractor

Those are good perspectives DuctTape and IslandTractor.

Another point for the north east is often no matter what size your lot is, no CUT or Ag tractor of any size is going to travel over much it. Just too rugged, full of rocks, etc. It's just land growing trees, that seems to be it's best use. It gets 'harvested' every thirty years or so.

That's a very different sort of land use than cropland that gets worked from road to road every year.

I've noticed that while surfing TBN that it seem that different parts of the states buy different size tractors. Maybe i'm crazy i don't know

This is a funny thread...

I was just noticing yesterday how many 1520's and 1720 new hollands are sold out of Michigan at tractorhouse. It's like they're all from Michigan, Ohio, Indiana or Pennsylvania.

In Quebec, mostly north of the St Lawrence river there is very little flat or farm land therefore tractor applications generally could be summarized as primarily for snow remouval and lanscaping work.

Southern area is very much farm country so bigger tractors quite popular there.

I started off with a Deere 510, (big guy) with blower and FEL.
Blower was too big and being 2WD it would not climb out of hilly driveways (loaded with chains) as well it was to large to turn it around.
I lucked out and traded for a 4 X 4 Mitsu with blower and loader.
That was about 18 yrs ago, and I never regretted that move.

The little Mitsu can do circles in my drive, sure it is smaller and narrower, just means a few more passes but manouverability is the key (+4WD) in my case.

The one big down side is road travel speed, about 7MPH at best!

Hey BigBi,
quite the observation, where I live in up-state New York I own a BX23 TLB and a B3200 TLB. I have 10 acres and they do everything just grand for me, from mowing the lower 2 to 3 acres to removing the heavy snow we receive from my 200' driveway. Now my neighbor is a dairy farmer who has about 200 cows and about 2000+ acres. He has the Big boys, Internationals, from the small of 786 to everything up to 1066's up to 1486. But he has the need, many hundreds of acres of corn and hay. Oh did I mention that he also has a small New Holland 55 that he uses for a lot of the smaller chores. I guess what I'm trying to say is size of tractor is based on the needs of the owner, good thread, take care.

Very interesting thread and helps explains why when someone (can I say almost daily?) comes on and asked the inevitable question, "what size tractor do I need?, the answers seem to vary from a BXxx to some 60 hp. :D:D

It has always been hilarious to witness, but this "regionalism" might help explain the wide variance in suggestions for spending somebody's money.

In my state, it depends. In our great Ag counties, you will find some rather huge Ag equipment, as you would anywhere. But up here in the north, it seems everyone has an old Ferguson T20, or Deere, or the ubiquitous Ford 8N parked out back, if nothing else, for SNOW, of which we get our fair share, of course.

The rest? Orange or Green subs. They completely dominate. We simply do not have the dealer network of other colors available to us. Just the way it is.

My approach was pretty scientific. I bought roughly the same size tractor that the previous owner had. Only about 3.5 acres to mow out of 76, the rest is heavily wooded. Would probably be tough to get around with a large tractor.

Best explained as this was/is FORD country and the NH, as you know, built upon that legacy.
