Linseed oil on trailer decks

Use the diesel in the mix to thin it. That way it can be painted on and soak in well.

I went to Lowe's and they had 2 gallons of Olympic's best 5 year semi transparent deck stain that they mixed the wrong tint. Bought the $30 a gallon stain for $4 a gallon. Used 2/3 gallon on the 20' trailer deck.

End result was a completely water repellent DRY finish that doesn't come off on your hands, clothes, or attack and deteriorate the rubber tires. Easy to clean, non slippery surface, no stench either. Even at $30 a gallon, I wouldn't use anything else on a trailer deck.

I'm sure that stain is oil bassed, but how well will it hold up to deisel fuel and gear oil spills? I refuel sometimes on my trailer(if pulling it by a station, or from my 5 gal container) and bushhogs etc leak from time to time, just thinking out loud. Also when i loaded my disk harrow on the trailer and moved it around the disks gouge the wood out, thereby taking a paint with it. Why not just buy treated wood for your trailer a 16 foot trailer could only cost what another $50 to get treated wood. I know treated is not forevr but a heck of a lot longer than untreated that mildews after the first rain.

I did get some hydraulic oil on it and the oil washed off with soap and water. I don't know about other fluids. Nice thing about the stain is that you see leaks quickly because it is a sealed, dry surface.

I've scraped the stain but it's incredibly easy to take a small brush and touch it up.

This trailer has treated wood but the stain adds a better level of protection because it seals the surface and repels water.

I don't think that there is a perfect coating for a trailer deck but the stain does have some nice advantages.

once i sell my old boat my trailer is going under the carport!

To much stuff my 40 ft canopy has two boats backed end to end under it, the side canopy off of it has the tow vehicle, the 2 car carport off the back of the house has the tractor and the old boat under it. One of the boats under the long shed is not mine but the Father in law. Oh i left out the brother in laws boat but it sits outside in the open. The joys ov living in the country with room, everybody thinks your a home for their stuff also. This reminds me of the HOA post on TBN somewhere, if you cant tell i live where there are none!! If i did i could not even have my extra 2 vehicles let alone my stuff. My wife has a toyota highlander and her old sturn which i drive for fuel mileage, i have my ranger which is my longdistance hunting truck and drive to work and for economy when i need a truck and i have the old chevy k10 for 4wd and to cut firewood and tow the boats and tractor. And befor anyone asks they are all paid for everything.

I have some linseed oil in the basement that I should get rid of. I was told it worked well as a rust inhibitor on steel. I'm wondering if it would be useful as a coating on the frame and underside of my old dump truck?

We paint our wooden fences and the trailer deck with used engine oil cut with 20% off road diesel. The ORD is dyed very red so I think that might help. It is only slippery until the excess washes off in that first rain. The dark engine oil looks nice on wood.

Anyone use Linseed oil on their treated trailer decks? Someone gave me four gallons and figured that I could use it on the trailers.

If you use Linseed Oil for anything at all...just be very careful to store any rags soaked with linseed oil in something fire safe ..something metal ..Linseed Oil rags can spontaneously com-bust..a friend of mines house burned down due to that and I myself had an experience with a rag I used to rub linseed oil onto a furniture piece I finished in my shop and I tossed the rag on the concrete and sure enough after some time an hour or so ..I saw it burst into flames and glad I was there to put it out.

Straight Linseed oil is not too good to paint with, cut it with thinner and it penetrates better.

This past summer my wife was finishing the woodwork for my daughters new home in a (mostly) vacant building I own. She dried the stain soaked rags in the sun (linseed oil base) and then tossed them into a plastic barrel filled with micl garbage.....and left the building.

A day later I opened the door and could not see two feet into the dense smoke filled warehouse. :confused2: The barrel had burned to the floor along with the contents.

Soot covered EVERYTHING. Thankfully, nothing burned but the barrel and contents.....but it was still a mega cleanup. A boat and my tractor were coated with soot. The woodwork had a coat of stain and varnish....and we were able to wash it and use it without a problem. (phew)

Later a test with more rags showed the rags to heat up in an hour that you could not hold them. Be careful with linseed oil!!
