John Deere 790
Hi everyone, I bought a used (340 hours) 790 with a 300 loader and 380A front plow back in June and am having a blast with it - both using and servicing.

It's my first tractor so I'm learning as I go. The left grille had a hole in it from the previous owner and I couldn't stand it so I bought a new front end and just finished replacing it. Fun!

I also just got a ballast box and need advice on the link/lock pins required. I'm assuming I need a 3/4" top link pin, but I see different varieties. Which is best?

For the side lock pins, the holes in the ballast box are 7/16" so do I get 3/8" lock pins?

Link, linch, hitch, draw, ... which ones do I need?

Thanks

Just passing it along, I have a 790 (2005 I think) I bought it new, we run a small farm and that thing works for a living, no lawn ornaments here, We have been more than pleased. It proforms very well in all kinds of conditions and has given us no troubles. We move round bales with the loader, even though they say its not heavy enough, we mow several acres of fields, it teds and rakes hay, it even runs an old NH 67 hayliner baler as long as I take it easy. We maintain a 1/4 mile of dirt road both winter and summer and general farm work. I really do love that tractor. I hope you have as good of luck with yours as I have had with mine.

So....you had to replace the grille huh? Do you mind telling me what that cost you? I have a similar problem stemming from an incident last summer....and I just bent the metal back in place the best I could. I have wondered what new front and side grilles would cost me.:D

Ouch! I only had a small hole in the left grille, but it required replacing the whole "box". The front grille was OK. I had to purchase a few of the gaskets (the left and right ones between the sides and front grille, and the two pieces above the headlights), but thankfully I had some foam that I saved and made the others myself. There were a couple of rubber parts that I was able to salvage.

The four gaskets were about $75 (ridiculous!) and the grille itself was $300.

Wow!!!.....spendy fix for me then. I think I will just live with my battle scars. I pounded 'em back out pretty well....and with the newly re-designed grille guard its hardly noticeable anymore. Thanks for the info. :)
