F150 Gas Milage

It would take me awhile to put together, but I have all of the data for all 3 of my vehicles. I have a notebook in each of my vehicles that I record the date, mileage, the $ amount, and the number of gallons put in. I've done it for all of my vehicles since my '91 S/10 when I bought it new, though I don't have any of those records any more. So I could provide it for our 2000 Accord since I purchased it in Feb. 08 w/ 71k on it, my '99 Silverado that I bought new, and our '08 Suburban that we bought new back in December.

That is (I've been told) is downright ****.
I started doing that with my first new car ('75 Fiat) and my first wife objected.
Both are gone.
My second wife does it most times on the cars I don't routinely drive.

It sure helps when you get in a discussion and someone says "Heck I get about 25mpg" and you say "Well I only get 22.4, but I've got records."

Most of my acquaintenances judge it by fillups per week or month.

Since I travel a lot w/ rental cars etc., and my daily 1 way commute is 1.2 miles, I usually only fill up once or twice a month

My wife questioned it at first, but has come on board with it and also does it regularly now w/o even questioning it. Guess I've gotten her trained. I think it goes hand in hand with the maitenance records. You can watch your fuel mileage and tell if it starts dropping to see if you need to change an air filter or plugs even though it may not necessarily be time (or have to go through the trouble to pull them unnecessarily) or you can see if you did something did it help your fuel mileage.

I'm **** about the fuel mileage, but I need to get better at writing the actual maintenance down. I'm very lax on that, I sometimes do it and other times I don't. So the fuel mileage notebook can help me keep track of when I do those things a little bit as well.

I dont get that detailed, allthough yall have me thinking now? I get around 10-12 mpg empty on hwy in my 1980 chevy k10 4x4 350 v8 with 3.07 gears and 33x12.50 tires on it. Towing my yanmar2000 my 16 ft tandem axle 16ft trailer my 4 ft bush hog and the 12 disk double gang harrow i have it will get 9-10 mpg on a long trip. Pretty good for an old truck. My ranger 1990 275,000 miles on it will get about 25 for highway driving through small towns on my way to work when i use the newly reinstalled AC that i finially got working after i dont want to say how much $$ i get about 23 mpg. That is a 4 cyl maual and id dont remember but i think 2.43 gears?

The 1996 saturn gets where we live in the country around 30 mpg and on the trip to the farm following the tw rig we averaged 36mpg. The wifes new to us 2001 toyota highlander will get 21.something or 20.something if we have some city miles, no matter when you fill it up, unless you have lots of city driving then it will be arround 18-19. This is with the 3.0L v-6 the same as the lexus engine back then. Later toyota used a 3.3 that would get around 24-25 mpg. Wish we had it.

before i get jumped on about the k10 with the 33''s where the stock size was 235 75 15 or like a 29 i have run on the interstate and seen that my odometer is off by around 15% so whatever the calculations useing it are get multiplied by 1.15 to get actual mpg and not the screwed up ones for the odometer. Oh my ranger tires a little bigger too but i can beleive that i could get much better than i get so i have not recently checked the odometer on the interstate i just always use what the odometer says.

I would love to have that kind of mileage! I have a '06 F-150 crew cab 4x4 w/ 3.73 gears, 6.5' bed, and a camper shell. It weighs in with me and a half tank of gas right at 6200#. Over the past year or so, it has averaged 13.70 mpg in mixed driving. That includes towing our camper, small boat, and tractor. My best tank was 16.3 (basically empty on I-10 in FL panhandle) and worst was 11.92 (pulling the camper with bikes on the roof and kayaks on the roof of the truck in a heavy quartering wind). Most impressive was a tank at 14.5 running 65-70 mph pulling the camper and GCVW of about 11,500#! The truck does tend to idle a good bit and that doesn't help. It is hard to sit at the bus stop waiting on the kids in the sun when it is 95+ degrees and the humidity is off the charts.

I guess the upside to my mileage is that I can always count on the 13.7 because it doesn't seem to matter much if I drive fast or slow, in town or hwy, tow or empty.

LOL thats funny! I bet runnin the AC prolly does drop it some, but I dont blame you. That humidity is a killer.

Does it pull your trailer o.k.? Thats some really numerically low gearing when you factor in those tires. Do you take it off roadin?

If you want something that really burns fuel I have a 2001 dodge 2500 w/360 4wd, standard cab with 143,000 miles, firestone10 ply mud tires that has never broke 11 mpg and has averaged 8.2 over its life. But to be fair it always been on the farm and used like a truck not commuter car.
I always keep the tank to tank mileage to see if something is wrong. Worst mileage I ever got out of a powerstroke was 5.2 over 300+ miles towing in to high winds with oversized load I was 12 wide 14'3" tall only grossed 22,000lbs.
If your getting +20mpg with your truck sell it and get a car because your not using like a truck.

My 98 F250 4x4 with 31 BFG AT tires and 4.6 V8, auto gets 14mpg at 150,000 miles. I used to get over 15 with it, but since the ethenol has been added to the gasoline, I haven't done better then 14. If I'm towing, it's allot worse. It just depends on the load, and what it weighs.

I bought the smaller engine with the hope of saving money with better mileage, but in reality, I think the engine works harder and uses more fuel then the bigger engine does.

You are right about that. It never works out. We bought a 2003 Mountaineer AWD new with the V8 and my neighbors son has the same year same truck with the V6. The V8 was a $600 option and had a tow rating of 6,880# while the V6 was limited to 5,280#. Anyway he still has his but we sold ours at 68,000 miles with zero issues and still the factory tires that had another 10K left of them. I looked at KBB values and the V8 brought about $1500 more than the V6 so the V8 really it made us $900 and our mpg were right at 18 for the life of the truck. His may be 1 mpg better but the numbers were so close we could not tell. In town ours did better but he would get us on the highway. Hook a trailer behind it and the V8 shined.
