I was in the Denton Walmart this morning and noticed that they had Riverside brand whole "young turkeys" for $.40 a pound; liimit of 2 per customer. I wasn't sure we had enough room in the freezer, so I waited until I got home and found we did have room for them. So I went to the Hickory Creek Walmart since it was closer. They had the same thing except theirs were all in the 18-24 pound size. If I were going to cook it in the oven, that would be OK, but for frying, I prefer 12-13 pound sizes. So I went back to Denton and got two just under 13 pounds each; total price $10.15 for the two.

I may be wrong, but I don't remember seeing them that cheap for quite some time.

At those prices it's hardly worth the effort to get one of the wild ones that come through the yard every afternoon... they are some fine looking birds...

Turkey prices way down, hence the reason they closed the turkey processing plant in my town. Lock stock and barrel sold out, after being closed for about a year. Between my uncle and cousin, we have 4 chest freezers full of turkeys bought for pennies on the dollar.

I wouldn't be surprised to see prices rising again after thanksgiving or later. Many turkey growers shutting down around here upper midwest, my uncle drove the turkeys to the plant from about a 5 state area, now his boss is scrambing trying to find other loads to haul, mostly corn repositioning. Decades of turkey hauling had come to a screeching halt. I don't understand it, it seems that turkey burger has been more prominent in the grocery stores, I would have thought that turkey demand would be outpacing supply, don't know where the extra supply came from.

From what I hear on the news, pork producers are shutting down at an incredibly fast rate here as well.

I remember the time about ten years ago when living in colorado springs where a grocery store had turkeys marked at a dollar a pound, only their computer system was set up wrong and actually charged a dollar per turkey.

I don't understand it either. I don't know how well the turkey burgers, turkey sausage, etc. sell, but personally I tried them but don't care for them. And we normally only buy whole turkeys for Thanksgiving and Christmas because it's too much meat for just the 2 of us.

However, we do sometimes buy the 3 pound boneless "turkey roasts"; kind of expensive, but very tasty when they come from our smoker.

I didn't know they were that expensive anywhere. Unless of course they were already smoked and ready to eat.:D

They always "just show" up brown and tasty on Thanksgiving and Christmas at our house.

I guess when the price gets to high, a chicken will show up and then I'll have to do some investigating.
