Howdy,

I am looking at a new RCR1860 (5 ft) rotary cutter by Landpride. Quoted $1400 by JD dealer. Has protective chains and slip clutch.

I will be using Bobcat CT230 (22hp PTO). Mainly pasture cutting and few woods.

1. How's the price?
2. Will my tractor be able to handle this without problem?
3. Any other opinions?
4. What maintenance do you need to do for slip clutches?

I use a RCR1860 behind a B7800 with 24 PTO HP. You will have to take it easy in the real heavy stuff but for normal pasture maintenance I think your Bobcat would handle it. The RCR 1860 is heavy but your Bobcat is about 1,000# heavier than my B7800. I paid $1,300 for mine three years ago with out the chain guards and slip clutch. If you purchase the RCR 1860 you will really like it. I am very pleased with mine.

I used to have a JD750 (21HP engine about 19HP PTO) which is a tad less than your CT230. I always ran a 4ft Landpride mower with it and that set up worked extremely well. I was told that tractor would run a 5ft mower but after seeing how much extra weight it needed on the frontend for the 4ft mower (when it was picked up) I said no way. I don't know how much your Bobcat weighs but I would guess it would be able to handle a 5ft mower. With 22PTO hp, that will probably be enough for pastures too, but if they are badly overgrown it may bog it down some and force you to go slower.

I bought the 4ft RC-48 Landpride that I had used for $500 so I can't help you out with the price. If all their mowers are as good as the one I had, then you can't go wrong buying a Landpride. Good luck.

Howdy,

My Bobcat weighs 3056#, and I believe that does not include the FEL. Engine HP is 30. The "lent to me" Bobcat 230 came with a rhino 5ft mower and FEL and seemed to do fine except I did have to go slow mainly because of overgrowth and cutting too close (6"). I can go slow, to get things cleaned up and then will be able to go a little faster down the road.

I like the 5ft, since it can cut closer to the fence line considering my tire width is about 60". If I do a 4ft cut, then I can't get as close. I looked at a new Frontier RC1048 with chains and slip clutch...new $1180.

thanks for the info,

A old rule of thumb is 5HP per foot on most pto implements. You will be in the ball park so go for it. You can get by with about 4HP per foot on some light duty pto stuff like finish mowers and snow blowers. For heavy duty items like rotary cutters and tillers stick with the 5HP rule.

My B7800 weighs 2,200# without the FEL. You will be on the edge with a 5' and the PTO HP you describe. As long as you take your time and don't push it the 5' will work. It will still be much less effort than a 4'. Land Pride is a premium mower. It will cost a bit more.

Chris, that kinda sounds contradictory.

According to LandPride the RCR1860 needs minimum of 20HP PTO. Was not sure how much a difference of 2HP PTO would make.

5 HP per foot of mower is a good rule of thumb but it is the minimum. You will have to take it easy in the heavy stuff. 8 HP per foot of mower will make the fur fly.

whistlepig,

Just looking at the Bobcat website where they match their implements with tractors. They allow their 60" cutters with the CT230, 225, and 215...perhaps that is odd. Their cutter is really made by rhino and from the rhino site the utility (low end) of cutters need a minimum of 20PTO HP. I suspect then the RCR1860 is really a light duty cutter as well.

Will probably go with the RCR1860 and go slow as needed.

thanks for everyones input
