I completed my 50 hr service on my GC2400. I went to finish the front axle plugs and could not get the plug to losen. It is 14 mm correct? My socket slipped 2 times then i stopped before it got stripped or broke off. How have you guys removed these for the first time? Seems to me they are on waaaay to tight. This is all I have left to complete my 50 hr service. Also I am supposed to use Permantran in the fromt axle as well? The manual says just gear oil.. seems sorta vague. And I noticed the manual dosen't tell you the sizes of the bolts etc where the service is concerned. I guess we have to figure that out. I assume the entire tractor is metric? thanks jeff

Yes, 14mm is right. They are just super tight. Try a wrench as a socket will put an akward anlge of pressure to the head. Permatran or a good gear oil, most switch to 80w-90 to hold up a little better.

The best option is to use a gear oil with an EP, (extreme pressure), designation. this will protect the best.

For a buck, or so more, you can even get synthetic.

Just remember, when refilling the front axle w/ lube, be sure to loosen the yellow plugs on top of both the right and left side of the axle. You can fill the axle from the plastic threaded filler plug behind the left wheel, but if you don't remove the top bleed plugs, there is a chance you won't add enough and it will look like it is full. It is also a good idea to keep track of the volume you add so it matches up with the capacity as stated in the manual.

Double check the fluid level after you drive the tractor around a little bit.

You can also just use Perm-III. My local dealer told me using a gear lube doesn't provide any benefit in a light weight tractor application since Perm-III was spec'd.

The spec. is for Permatran -OR- grear lube. There is a difference in lubrication, if you use an "EP" designated, (extreme pressure), gear lube.

Is it necessary? Perhaps not, but since it does not really cost any more, take the free insurance.

Even though there is probably no real benefit in a light duty application like this, I'll probably use gear lube when it is time for my next fluid change....

Only use 6 pt. sockets or wrenches on these tough bolts.

Yup a 6pt socket.. even a good open end wrench will open enough to slip sometimes....We get some come in that have been rounded off with vice grips and weld another nut on to it to get them out...
