Storing Wine

Low to mid 20s Fahrenheit. Most wine cellars are kept much warmer than that...

Right around 55 degress F is the proper storage temperature for wine. Or do what we do and drink it fast enough that storage is not an issue.

If the purpose of this question is because you live in an area with extensive subfreezing weather and don't have a more temperature moderated storage place, I'd be concerned about bottle breakage and cork pushing by the wine freezing. Can't see any good coming to wine subjected to freeze thaw cycles.

This is my "short answer".

If the reason for the question is that you are thinking of building a wine cellar to store wine that needs to age - the ideal temperature is 55 degrees Fahrenheit and the humidity should be 60%. This applies to wine being stored many years (5 or more).

I have two storage areas, the first being an open presentation area that holds the wines I will drink in the next few year. The second area is my temperature and humidity controlled wine cellar, this is where I store the wine that will be drank by my friends at my funeral.:D

Most important is temperature variation and UV light, if the temp varies more then a few degrees eventually oxygen can be induced into the bottle spoiling the wine and UV light hastens the aging process.

No I am not making wine, I had a couple bottles in the RV and wondered if I needed to get them out as cold air is headed to the NC mountains.
Thanks for all your help!
