CK 30 stiff 4WD shifter

Were the shift shaft goes through the transmission case in the key. Make sure you lubicate the shaft at the case. This is true for anywhere a shaft goes through the case, but is most noticeable on the 4wd shifter because there isn't a lot of mechanical advantage in the linkage, and doesn't get used as often.

Lube right at the case and work the shaft. It will free up nicely.

For years now, I don't push the clutch in, but rather (with the front wheels straight) I apply firm but not excessive pressure on the shift lever and gently tap the HST pedal forward and back. It usually slips in immediately. Shifting out of 4wd is the same but since the teeth are generally under some pressure I have to rock it gently back and froth a couple of inches (the tractor, not the lever) several times before it slides out.[/QUOTE]

ERE,
You have the method perfected. That is what I have always done. If your think about moving gears, spines or shifting dogs into place you need to align them first or you will be stressing all related parts for no good reason and something will bend or break. Clutch pedal up, light pressure on shifter or 4x4 lever and slight movements of the HST pedal fore and aft. When the parts align they will fit together. Same deal to disengage. If parts are well lubed, this method will always work.

the leverage of that short shaft should be addressed. I have to stand on it to put my CK30 into 4WD and I have to use a pry bar to take it out of 4WD. I have followed the lube suggestions none of which have cured the problem. The owner should be able to shift in and out of 4wd with little effort. That is not the case with my CK30HST. My next tractor purchase will compare this pain in the *** feature with what else is available. This design flaw is a very big deal.

I don't ever remember taking mine out of FWD. I'm never on the pavement and rarely on the driveway except to plow snow in the winter. I must check mine for movement.

Try to take it out of 4WD........you'll see

Did that Saturday and it slid right out of FWD and then right back in. Did it a couple of times and it was as free as a bird. Surprised the heck out of me.

A tip I picked up here on TBN is to turn the wheel all the way to the left. Apparently this lines up the gears. If mine doesn't slide in easily I turn the wheel all the way to the left and it slides right into FWD, every time. Has anyone else tried this and is it working for you?

If you have a FEL take the weight off the front wheel and it might suprise you how well it works.
Takes all the bind out of the driveline which might help.
Just a thought.

I tried this today and it was way easier to shift, good tip.

Thanks for posting your findings. (Turning the steering wheel all the way to the left to more easily engage FWD).
That's three of us (Albmn10, you & I) that I know of that have had success with this method.

Maybe more will check in with their findings........

Don
