telephone pole question

KennyD,

Are the "green" poles treated with the same chemical as treated lumber?

Don't know...I just climbed them-not treated them:D

I suspect not though, especially since most regular treated lumber is not rated for ground contact, whereas the poles obviously are.

Poles in OZ are treated with CCA (Copper Chromium Arsenate) . They are pretty safe unless they are burnt , the ashes will kill cattle if they lick them . Splinters in your skin will get infected , and it is a no no to build horse yards with them as the horses chew the tops and can die . But used for it's intended purpose of protecting poles , it does very well .

You don't want to breathe the saw dust when cutting them. Also, they're not approved for indoors due to fumes during a fire.

I was wondering what you guy's familiar with tel. poles thought about using ,say, 2" cut boards for a vehicle bridge top? versus the cost and added weight of concrete.

most bandsaw guys wont do it for 2 reasons.

one breathing the dust is WAY toxic (worse than regular pressure treated material) two, you get about 1 cut per blade so if you do find someone to do it expect them to charge an addtional fee to resharpen all the blades they go through.

.

Roger that , I had Asthma like symptoms for two years after I built my pole frame home out of them . Even though I was wearing a twin filter dust mask , it still got in . I could still taste it on my lips the following day after cutting it . Arsenic is an accumulative poison , it wont kill you straight away , but when the level reaches a certain amount...............

I was doing some pretty serious cutting of them though , I was chainsaw cutting grooves 10' long by 1 1/4" wide and 3" deep to house the solid walling I used .

If I suddenly stop posting one day , you will know what happened .:D
