I know in florida, every time you renew your tag you can change declaired gvw rating.. I take it many other states don't do that..

In NY you can change it also on the registration, but with enforcement of the tow vehicle being rated for the trailer, they go off the plate on the trailer.

In Indiana the only way to change the GVWR on a trailer is a new title must be applied for. This requires a new vin number being issued and a new data plate being affixed to the trailer. Once this is done a police inspection must be done. Take the paperwork to the BMV and pay the man.

After reading the replies and the differnt States DMV. it made me pull out all the specs on mine. My F250 and 7M. I new was a overkill for mostly my small Grey MKT.But it looks like I will have a good road trip coming up. UPPER RIGHT Coast!! Sure am glad I don't have to go through Ny.City anymore. I can remember going to Conn. from MD. to my aunts when I was growing up and recalling quite a few times how fast a diasbled car would be stripped in the Seventy's.We would head out Fri. eve. and head back Sun. afternoon with not much left of it. Seen a couple of times the doors were even gone just kind of imagining how quick there gone now a days

I've never seen any enforcement of the tow vehicle being rated for the trailer here.It may be here, but locally no one seems to care. All they care about with the tow vehicle is that the trailers tongue weight isnt overloading the tow vehicle. If its not overweight on the rear axle, and the total,no issues. You can register a trailer for any amount of weight, but the limit will be the weakest link, axle, tire, rim, and even the trailer coupler/ball hitch rating.Whichever is the lowest is the max legal weight you can tow.

When I bought my 14K dump trailer I wanted to derate it. The dealer said it could only be derated one class of tags...14K to 12K. When I got the registration and tag it was for 14K. Apparently the state dis-allowed the dealer to derate the trailer when they sent the registration paper work in. The dealer ate the difference on the tag . Anyway, when renewal time rolled around I went to the IL secretary of state office and asked if I could derate the trailer. They said yes. So I paid a fee and derated it to 10K. Saves me a considerable amount on the tag every year. I use it for hauling construction debris...high volume, little weight. Before I derated it I checked to see if I could change it back. They said it wouldn't be a problem as long as I paid the fee to have it done.
Having said that, I'm not sure how the guys on the enforcement side of things look at this.

DMV laws all seem like 'sausage' to me.. hard to know what's in them.. and would make you sick if you did...
