Our sassafras burns nice and hot. It pops a lot. However, it is a softer wood and the dried pieces are very light weight. It burns up very quickly. Even on the low setting in our stove, it will burn a full load up in 4 hours. I get about 6 hours out of our cherry and oak. I get about 8 hours out of our locust. The only reason I harvested it is because I wanted those sassafras tress out of that area.

Same here..I'm not usually too choosey about what I burn though. I take what I can get most of the time so long as it's not punky. We don't usually see sassafras that big here in Jersey. Not sure why. And the branches smell more spicey than anything. The roots smell like rootbeer.

Another one that's pretty common here is linden. Its properties are a little different from sassafras. It holds allot of moisture when it's alive but when it's cut up and dried it's lightweight and burns hot and fast....splits easy too.

After some very close meticulous examination The conclusion reached was really quite evident. It's cut up wood! No doubt about it!

I do believe that it is steak wood. Burn a bunch of it and suspend some good old american beef on a rack above the coals. Give it 5 minutes on one side and about 3 on the other and I think it will be done. Call it beaf wood or fire wood, the results will be the same. It will be gone and you will just have fond memories about it.

I have only used it once so far. I had some time to split yesterday but it rained all day.
