Those of us that love our sight and eys have auto darkening. The best thing to come down the pike since sliced bread.

I've had a 30.00 ebay unit for 3 or 4 years now. Cheesy strap and support system, but it works. I can't see sp[ending the money for the $$$ units that may be a little more quality, but have the same end result.

My sporadic welding habits where I'm welding most of the day, everyday for a week or no welding for months, made it hard for me to justify an auto dark helmet, especially since my old school Herman Munster type served me well for so many years.

Was at the welding supply house where all the pros go, I was only there to buy rods and just spur of the moment I decided it was time to get with the 21 century. They had a special on one model for around $80. but it didn't feel good on my head so I got the next better one ~$150. got extra cover lenses with it.

Like everyone else said, I'll never go back, that little bit of time saved from flipping hood up and down makes you so much more productive, and the weld quality goes up as well.
There was no learning curve, just went to town with it and had an instant realization, another convenience I wouldn't want to live without.

Don't know how these rate compared to HF, but it was pretty low in their line up, they had some that were over $500.

I agree you can't put a price on your eye sight, AD helmets are good for assembly work , I didn't trust them for constant daily welding at work , especially for carbon arcing, and larger diameter welding rods!

Lets be honest I spend more than $100 for my shooting glass and most of us that wear glasses wouldn't buy them a Dollar store. I don't trust anything HF sells that has electronics why would anyone buy a saftey item there?????
I have made it a point to buy stuff made in the USA when possible and on saftey equipment spend more than I can afford as I cant afford to get hurt or go blind.

On the other hand I bet more guys (especially amateurs like me) have done more damage to their eyes while struggling with non darkening helmets. So I'd suggest that even a crappy auto-darkener is an eyesight saver if you are just an occasional welder.

I'm guilty of just turning my head to tack something.

More than once woke up with a hand full of sand in just one eye.

I'm willing to bet that all of the AD hoods mentioned here are made in China.
