What winch is on your 3010 Mule?

robert please enlighten me since my statement was only "partially correct."
Which part of my post is incorrect?

BTW, in my brother's case, the winch failures weren't from pulling the Gator, rather, he was using the winch to pull felled trees in the woods. It was the duration of the pull that did them in more than the weight. Hence, the discussion of duty cycle.

Maybe I am missing something here. Why would one need a 4,000# winch attached to something that weighs 1,500#? Wouldn't the tail be wagging the dog? I will agree on the steel cable. First thing I did was replace the steel aircraft with Amsteel Blue synthetic winch rope. I have stalled out my Warn winch. It takes a whole lot to do so but I have done it. It didn't hurt the winch. Warn is good stuff. To say a Warn will burn up with a little bit of overload seems unfair.

The fact that duty cycle and winches go together. A winch isn't really thought of in terms of duty cycle. Not saying you are wrong, just not a common discussion when talking about winches as pulling/lifting capacity is the main objective therefor not entirely correct in a discussion on winches.

Also the fact that duty cycle isn't going to get anyone killed or maimed.

Good on you for replacing the steel cable. Smart move.

In terms of the why do you need a 4K winch on a 1500lb machine? As I explained earlier, a winch is rated at -1 wrap of the spool. So in relative terms, take just 2 or 3 feet off the spool of a 2500lb winch and you have already exceeded its strength by the sheer weight of your vehicle. Imagine the incredible amount of pulling force and associated strain on a cable let out for 30 feet on a 1500lb machine. My life or those around me is not going to be risked by "not enough tool for the job".

Ever see a 4x4 truck that is run hard with a smaller than at least a 10 or 12,000 lb winch? Ever wonder why?

You need to replace your roller Fairleads with Hawse Fairleads. The roller Fairleads can pinch your synthetic rope and tear it up.

Robert,
Very much looking forward to your Viper winch installation/completion photos. I recall that you have a 3010 Trans gas. I have a 3010 Trans diesel. Do you know that if I follow your lead and do a similar install could I run into any difficulty as to the size or placement of the radiator? I have about 1-1/4" of radiator (not including the two mounting tabs) hanging down below the black plastic body grille inboard of the brush guard/bumper. I don't yet know if there is a difference between the gas and deisel radiator setups.
thanks, Jerry

Jerry,

I don't know about the radiator sizing, but the main issue of mounting the Viper (or Warn whose dimensions are the same) is going to be overall length (which is the mounted L/R length in this case). Very tight fit.

Unfortunately, I still haven't gotten to it as it was beautiful here today and I was able to get lots done on my truck. Now that it is winter ready, the Mule is at the top of the to do list.

I mounted a Warn RT30 on my 3010 trans 4x4. It fits great and I've had no problems pulling with it. :D

Happyman,
Did you have use an adapter plate, if so can you tell me which one? Is it mounted inboard of the brush guard where Kawasaki has intended it to go? Is the roller fairlead right out of the box or did you spec your mule model to the supplier as you purchased it?
Thanks

This won't help much, but bigger is better then to small????

I have a yamaha rhino 700FI, I bought and installed a 3000LB winch form harbor frieght. If I had the $$$ I would have definitely went with 4000LB. Like I say it is better to be over powered and not need it then to be under powered and poop out of luck. When these machines get stuck they are not just moving their weight{mine is just under1200lbs}. They usually are on a bank or in muck that is sucking around the tires/wheels and causing a lot of hold back. I use my winch to operate the snow plow and if needed pull me out of a predicament.
