New discovery on cold start

Norm,

California is right. I recently had to do some rewiring and discovered that the switch powered the TS in both TS and Start positions.

On some models, like my 1510 D you do not need to fill the reservoir because the fuel return from the injectors fills the little bottle. For us then there is always fuel for the TS!

Before replying I went out to see for myself so nobody thinks I'm ....... :D

Yes, the Thermostart works when the key is in Start position as well as when twisted left. I took some photos and posted them in a new thread so we don't highjack Trkrd's thread more than we have already.

See ThermoStart - photos of TS flame.

Norm, mine has that optional R1-R2 jumper shown in the YM240 wiring diagram. I assumed that jumper provides TS at both key positions.

Good thinking

Excuse my ignorance, but what is this TS thing? What's the bottle everyones talking about, and what goes in it?

I have a YM1700 that I need to use in the cold, do I have TS?

I have a YM1700 and it does not. The winters here are not too bad. So I don't really need it. I believe that it may be an optional feature.

The thermostart device looks about like a spark plug. A small reservoir provides diesel to it.

(Note this is for the US Yanmars; on grays the throttle push/pull is opposite.)

Don't forget, California, they got it wrong. According to items 6 and 7 they have it starting with the decomp lever pulled, (for all the world to see:)).

Norm, I also have thougt about this? , There has got to be some sort of explanation as to why this is? I know with my kubota it did help sometimes to pull the decompression release lever in order to get it fired up, although this was after I felt I had flood the cylinder and was using this method to help to clear it out, I think by my theory only if an engine is cold and hard to turn over you can release the compression on the cylinder and have it turn over 10-20-seconds the friction created by the rings will help to warm the cylinder walls and when I warm the plugs it makes it that much easier to start, I'm probably wrong but this is only a theory,...
Norm I see you are from Fort Lauderdale not too far from where I lived back in the mid 60's place call Hollywood, up the road from the Hog farm and the Seminole Indian reservation, do you get around that area much? I bet lot of changes over the 40+ years
