New Trailer

Good thread... the debate of torsion vs spring axles is an interesting one. I'm undecided.

I've got a 14K tilt-bed equipment trailer that I can't say enough good things about!! It's got torsion axles and it's the straightest pulling, straightest stopping and smoothest running trailer I've ever had the opportunity to hook up! Either loaded to the max or not.

That said - it's a bumper pull and I'm looking at a new, deck-over goose-neck. 15.6K GVWR.

I can get it with/without torsion axles; slipper springs. The dealer-salesman does not speak highly of torsion axles. He recommends staying with leaf springs but has not elaborated or illustrated why I should go that direction.

Torsion = independant suspension, smoother ride, less maintaince, fewer parts. If you have a flat or lose a tire on a tandem you simply, remove the wheel and go about your business ( with in reason) until you can repair/replace the tire or wheel.

Springs = straight axle with rough ride, broken shackles, springs, more parts. If you lose a wheel or tire- you have to "tie up" the springs if you wnat to go about your business ;)

They make more money selling you parts for a leaf spring trailer ;)

What about a spare tire? I would not drive a trailer 1 mile down the road without a spare. I even carry bearings and races in my truck in zip lock bags pre greased and ready to go. Lost 3 days one time with a bearing ordeal.

I should have stated what my brain was thinking- If you do not have a spare tire or if you lose a wheel- we have lost a couple tires on the same trip- ugh

Been there before also. I even carry a extra hub setup bearings and all besides a spare tire. Found out the hard way one night coming back from Okeechobee and lost wheel and Hub 15 miles from my house in Ga. We didn't have cell phone coverage out here back then and sure didn't like leaving my Ranger on side of the road at 2 in the morning.:(

I am looking for a new dump trailer. 14000lb with all the extras, i have a trailer from midsota mfg and i think they are by far the best. I was wondering if there are any trailers that compare to them. Please dont post something like a PJ or something of that lower end sort these are very nice trailers.

i'd also like to know whats so bad about PJs, and what makes yours sooooo much better. how many other dump trailers have you owned to be able to say they are the best; clearly you must have owned many brands to make a blanket statement like that.

clearly, trailer snobs do exist. Nice first post, BTW. work on your puctuation and sentance structure-makes it easier for us to comprehend

i dont see whats so great about the midsota trailer. looks and is spec'd like every other dump trailer out there, just more electrical garbage to go bad......
i could build that in my garage-i dont see aything special about it.

a poly toolbox?! that would last about 5 minutes in any real work situation..

if its sooo great, go buy another one.............why do you need another one?

Chris

the smart thing to do is mount a stub axle on the side and bolt on a whole new hub/tire.

that way you have an extra set of bearings, hub, breaks everthing.
