My 1620 (with a hydro trans) does that too. It's like there is no play around the center of the pedal. I've looked for an adjustment but have not found one.

Both of these tractors have a neutralizing adjustment procedure detailed in their respective service manuals.

Stuart, your HST is not like a clutch pedal or brake pedal. You really don't want an area of free play on HST control pedals. The pedals return to center and the adjustment would adjust the transmission so it's swashplate is in the neutral position when the pedals are. I've looked at the HST controls diagrams on Messicks.com and I see where the adjustable rod is located, but since I don't have access to a service manual, I don't want to give instructions that may be wrong. The OP should have his dealer do this adjustment at the 50 hr service or he and you both should consult with your dealer's service manager to see if he will tell you how to do the adjustment. Otherwise, I'd recommend taking your tractor in for service or purchasing the service manual. If you adjust this wrong, you could end up with a dangerous situation where your tractor would not go into gear from neutral or it would surge forward or reverse when shifted into range.

I think that my issue is a poor return to center. When the HST pedal is right in the center, all is well. But if you just release your foot off the HST pedal, it returns to center or very close to center (when it creeps). I've tried to lube every fitting but that has not helped.

Stuart, if you go to messicks.com and click on their picture for "parts" and then the New Holland emblem on the next page under "Major Product Lines," you will see a box where you can enter your tractor model "1620." A number of choices will come up and then you can select the 1620 series tractor from that list and double-click. That will provide you with parts diagrams listings on the left side of the page. Click on "transmission" and then scroll to HST Control. What you will see is that there is one selection for tractors '87 to '92, one for HST Neutralizer Kit, and one for HST controls '92 and on.
It appears that some early tractors had problems with neutralizing the HST pedal and New Holland modified the design of the HST control pedal and linkage. They removed one adjustable link and put in a solid unadjustable piece. Perhaps too many people were making adjustments in the wrong spot and NH fixed that by removing the one adjustable rod. As you can see in the diagram, there is a return spring and adjustable rod in another location. Items 7, 11, and 12 will change how the transmission neutralizes and what the return pressure is. This looks far to complex for me to make a guess as to how to make adjustments. If it were mine, I'd let the dealer do it or at least consult with him before doing anything.
