I have been wanting to build a new barn for years, finally got up the nerve to just do it. I will say that I got alot of ideas and tips from other pole barn threads posted here.

I have been working on this with my brother for about two months, the weather and available time has slowed what I can get done lately.

Started with it being 20 x 28 but as we put in the posts we decided on 20 x 36. Yes, I should have went even larger. Here are some of the photos.

First time using the post hole digger, can't imagine doing it without.

Dug each hole as deep as I could, put a cement block at the bottom of each, I have heavy clay soil.

6x6 treated posts, two bags of dry concrete mix and crushed stone.

2x12's along the top, both front and back attached with 1/2 inch galv carriage bolts.

I had originally planned on steel siding, on the way to order it I stopped by an Amish lumber mill. They had rough sawn Hemlock, had been setting for about 7 months...........couldn't resist. I plan on putting the battens on in the late spring.

Ivy green steel roof, I really debated this too between shingles or metal. I will say that once we got started it sure goes up fast.

After getting the main section up I decided to put an overhang on the back, running the full length. Alot of my decisions were/are made as I go. The roof would have been alot easier if I would have decided this at the beginning.

At the ends of the overhang I am planning on cutting an arch.

Looking real good. It is amazing what just a post hole digger and a tractor will cause a guy to do.

Nice job. I need to add a lean-to like yours onto my shed this spring. I like your design.

Thanks for the pics.

Nice job! Looks like it took you around 2 months to get this project done. Very professional looking. Congratulations

Looks great! I have set my corner poles and that is it. Will get back to it one of these days.

Did you use trusses or stick build. How far apart did you place the trusses or rafters? On the roof did you lay the purlins on there side? Are they 2x4's? When you were thinking of using metal sides were you going screw them to the girts? Were you concerned about dropping something inside against the side and denting it? I realy like to boards and the batten. It will look much better I think than the metal sides.

Will you fill with gravel or concrete?

Thanks for the pictures. Gives me some ideas.

I used trusses, 16" oc...........2x4's flat every 2 feet. I had originally planned on ivy green and cream colored metal siding but after seeing the Hemlock I changed my mind. I know there will be alot more maintenance with the wood. I would imagine there are pros/cons on using either.

on your raw hemlock siding, google "valhala lifetime wood preserver" this stuff is a great product, never needs to be restained, and is waterbased. I have used it on my barn, it goes on like muddy water, turns green after a couple days, and turns a dark silvery grey after several months, looking like aged wood. if that interests you...
