Any reason for buying schedule 80 instead of schedule 40? Schedule 40 is 1" ID... schedule 80 starts from the same OD as schedule 40 and thickens the wall leaving a smaller ID. In theory, drilling schedule 80 out to 1" ID leaves you with schedule 40 pipe.

Actually,if you want a really tight (good) fit,it would be better to drill, ream,or whatever, schedule 80 to the exact size you want. Schedule 40 is (IMO) too sloppy of a fit to be used for a 1" size.

I'm not sure I comprehend the problem if its just holding pins. Maybe I'm missing something?

If a little play is not a problem,I agree totally to just use Sch.40,but if he wants a pretty snug fit, that is why I mentioned what he wants to do would be better.

If I was concerned about the fit, I would go to DOM tubing rather than trying to drill. Just seams easier to me.

When I mic'd out the Schedule 40 at the steel place it was a little over 1". I figured that with schedule 80 I could drill and ream it to whatever tolerance I want.

Now I just need a big enough drill bit and a reamer. I'm watching ebay for a reamer.

True to predictions I didn't get much done on the backhoe today. I am including a picture of one of the donor machines. I got this baby last summer for next to nothing. The theory is that the 38 Hp Kubota diesel engine runs great, but the wheel drive pump went out. I haven't had a chance to test the engine yet. I'm using the pins and bushings that the reels ride on as my pins for the articulation points on the backhoe. All I got done today was to disassemble some of the reels in the daylight and move them into the garage so that some evening I can start the process of cutting the bushings off.

I may end up taking some other stuff off of this machine too. It has a half dozen or so rams, pumps, hydraulic motors, and all the hose to go with it. There's a three spool valve that I may take for my loader (grapple build possibly in the future), and then move the current two spool loader valve back to the backhoe to run the outriggers.

DOM was a special order item. I'd have to bring in 20 feet of it. They had a remnant of schedule 80 that they gave me without a cut charge.

There are a few places (i.e. bucket linkages) where the pin will actually rotate within the tube. In those places I want to have a pretty tight tolerance.

Makes sense. I'm following you now.
