I,ve got a walnut tree that died a year or two ago( i think thanks to my neighbor who has an undue fondness for Roundup) Any way it's not that tall, maybe 20 ft, the trunk is about 30-35 inches in diameter? Should I just dig it out, or is there something more useful that should explore? I don't know the variety, but it did produce a green walnut that I made some Italian liquor out of(Nocino?)Any ideas welcomed, including curse's ,hex's , bad karma, that I can use on my neighbor

Are you sure you don't mean circumference?

A 20' high tree with a 30" diameter trunk would be quite unusual.

is it English or Black walnut? I dont know if there is a demand for the english? perhaps some furniture makers, I do know that their is a large demand for Black walnut logs, about 20 years ago I had 2 removed from our back yard in order to put in a swiming pool, along with removing some water oaks,
I had the person who cut them down agree to remove everything, he left the Black walnut logs behind, about 8-10ft lengths and said he had another person coming for them the next day, when this man showed to get them he said he had bought them for 500.00  and that was only half what they were worth, said that gun stocks were made from them and these logs would turnout a couple hundred gunstocks, I still fill the pain from kicking myself in the arss that day when I think about it:rolleyes:

Several years ago I heard that somebbody was stealing black wallnut trees from Iowa farm using a helicopter.
Friend of mine is a partner in veneer making plant and he says that the wallnut wood is worth pretty good money.

If you advertise to sell them, don't mention they came from your yard. We had a storm a few months back and the loggers didn't keep a tree that had been in a yard. They said the nails and such that could be in them tear the heck out of expensive mill blades.

I'd mill it, as long as one could get a fairly decent log or 2. Walnut does make beautifull gun stocks and furniture.

Rest assured, your neighbor and his Roundup did not kill your tree.

I would, why not? Just hope the tree is solid all the way through. Black walnut trees have a tendency to centre rot.

Looking for response back from OP.
Pic of tree would help make a response.
The dimensions given don't add up. :)

Likely, being in CA, it is not the eastern black walnut (Juglans nigra) that is highly valued for its wood. More likely it is Juglans Californica that grows more like a bush or a shrub.
Pics would be important to help with your decision.
But bottom line, it prolly is better than just firewood.
