Hi,
I need some info on the Weldment Adaptor Plate on a JD 48 backhoe. I know there are 2 sizes. Large frame and medium frame. What is the difference in the 2 sizes ? Is it possible to take the large frame plate and modify if to the medium size ? Has anyone made this modification? I need a medium size ,all I can find is the large frame. To buy new is very expensive. I would even trade someone a large frame plate for a medium plate.

Thanks, Ken

I have a 48 but don't know what plate you are referring to?

If it's the main mounting plates that stays on the tractor, I did not know there were 2 sizes, maybe for dif size tractors, if so I doubt there would be any way to interchange without some serious modding.
What tractor are you trying to put it on? I have a 4310

I'm referring to the plate that is on the backhoe. The black framework that the seat attaches to. This connects to the side plates .The side plate like the one you show in the picture are specific for the model tractor. You have the medium size frame tractor. I need the same size as yours. I have a 3320.

The only thing I can offer is to take some pics or measurements for you. Let me know.

So you have the plates on the tractor? The part your interested is on the back hoe. I guess for using the 48 BH on larger frame tractor would mean that not only the frame work on the tractor is different but also on the BH.

Thanks for the reply JB. Yeah that plate on the backhoe comes in two sizes. I was wondering how hard it would be to modify. My guess is that the width is different. I haven't came across the right combination of parts for my tractor. All the backhoes I'm finding are set up for the larger frame tractors (4500-4700, 4000 series) Thanks

I purchased a 48 backhoe on ebay a few years ago. It came with the bracket for the large frame tractor.

I have it mounted on a 4310. I purchased the two plates that bolt to the tractor itself from Deere. They told me at the time that I would either need to replace the bracket, which is part of the backhoe, with the AM127743 bracket for medium frame tractors, or modify the bracket myself.

As it turned out, the hoe with large frame bracket does fit onto the 4310. The spacing is the same where it attaches. Judging from the pictures on jdparts, this setup puts the hoe several inches lower and rearward of where it would be. And the feature where you lift the hoe into place with the rockshaft arms doesn't work because the spacing of the hooks at the top of the bracket is different.

I've been using it like this. Like you, I'm thinking of either finding someone to trade it for the medium frame, or modifying the bracket. That rockshaft feature would be nice.

For my own edification.. and maybe for a few others reading your post -- how do you get the hoe aligned up and into the upper pin holes?

Without the rockshaft lift?

Curious - Thanks.

First put the rockshaft up out of the way. Then back up close enough to hook up the hoses. Then adjust the height and angle of the hoe using the outriggers and boom so that the hoe is a few inches low and leaning a little away from the tractor. Then back the tractor up so that the downward-facing hooks on the tractor adapter plates are just above the lower pins of the backhoe adapter. Then lift the hoe using the outriggers - the lower pins will now be in position on the tractor plate. Tilt the hoe back (toward tractor) with the boom (bucket against the ground) and the upper pins will line right up.

I had to slightly modify the bracket for the power beyond fittings for clearance.

Thanks for the explaination.. your approach with the JD 48 is more or less the same as hooking up the backhoe on my JD 110.
