Comparison Compare Massey F. against 'big three'

I have a MF 375 bought new in 1986 and it has been nothing but trouble.

why would you keep it going on 24 yrs now with all those troubles?

The only reservation I have so far is that it looks like there is limited access to the engine, because of the way the hood tilts up.

It belonged to my father in law with whom I was very close and it has great sentimental value to us. We worked a lot together. I could never get him to buy the "right" tractors or trucks, but I did convert him to Stihl chainsaws.

IMHO.. i've always considered MF to be one of the 'big 3' is in.. all 4 members of the big 3.. all top teir brands.. etc.

In researching the different manufacturers, I've sometimes heard people call Massey Ferguson the 'cadillac' of tractors. But their prices and capabilities don't seem to be any different from Kubota, Deere, and NH.

Any general thoughts on how Massey stacks up against the others?

Where are they made?

I find it interesting in the comparison in MATT400's post they don't even use a New Holland hydro.

Uhhh, not to burst anyones bubble but Massey Ferguson is the best selling tractor brand in the World since 1962 according to this link and many other online sources.

The fact is that the Big Three in tractors are Massey Ferguson, John Deere and New Holland.

I have a MF 375 bought new in 1986 and it has been nothing but trouble. The dash has gone out three times and now we just guess at RPM, fuel etc. We have had the lights "fixed" several times and gave up. The 3-point hitch doesn't work worth a darned; draft control is hit or miss. We are on our third fuel pump now and the power steering has gone out several times. Other than that, it runs great; well actually it's not running now, but if it was; oh buddy...

The Highway Department tried MF a couple of years ago, but went back to John Deere. I don't know why, just may be the bidding process.

I have no experience with or knowledge of the smaller MF machinery.

We may just have a lemon as every manufacturer turns them out once in a while, but it has soured me on the brand.

I'l have to agree with the electrical issues as most of the 300 series i've been around have been troublesome. The draught is usually pretty good on them though and mechanically known as a very good tractor

Is'nt it interesting what people consider to be the "big 3" and how it changes over the years. I've always thought of it as the "big 4" ..Caseih,FordNH,JD,MF and personally i'd have to put JD last.
From internet junk that i read claas the biggest seller worldwide right now..? I dont know why anyone would buy a fendt when you can have the same cvt gearbox with a better engine in a MF.
The good old 2000 series,698T, 12-12 shuttles in the 390's , the cabs on the 3000 series, Dynashift ....Mf have always been up there for me..?

Yeah, like I said, we may just have gotten a lemon. People buy green almost exclusively with a few Case while MF/Kubota/New Holland are considered to be "off brand", so we are the only MF owners I know. Funny how different parts of the country are.

I'd suggest that Kubota's Lack of large tractors may influence their lack of presence in some areas.
