Hello All,

Since everyone is now out of stock for some time of the 4 link ladder chains I am going to make my own, However I would like to know a few things from those of you that have this size tire with 4 link chains

1. What is the length of the side chain?

2. What is the length of the cross links?

3. How many cross links are on the chains?

Thanks

What I did:
First decided I didn't want the side chains down on the sidewalls, but instead up in the scallop of the R_4 bars. So I measured that distance with a tape measure.

Second, I measured the distance from one side to the other with a tape measure.

I bought 6/0 side chain and 9/0 cross chain, the chain hooks, an inside side-chain hook, and two adjustable latches.

I bought from a local truck supplier, as this chain size is used on the large county trucks and the local supplier had chain and chain parts in stock.

Here is a pic of the chains I made (put together). As you can see, they are 5 link.

I made a set for an old 9n like this... Measure the diameter, subtract 6", Multiply by Pi (3.14) This is the length. Add a couple of inches to this length for a connection. you need four of these. Measure the distance from the chain, over the top and down the other side to the inside chain. Figure a cross piece every foot. I used 1/4" chain for the outside, and recycled double D rings for the cross pieces. I also picked HEAVY DUTY split rings for the connections because the lighter ones bent and tore out when I spun the tires. I also bought four of the threaded links for the ends. good luck...

My tractor is small so the cross chain is 1/4 and 5/16 for main chain. I cut the end links on each cross piece on one side of link, twisted them open enough to fit over the side chains. Closed them up and welded the link where I cut them. I have run these for at least 6-7 years now though I am 100% in dirt or gravel. Like the last poster, I used a threaded link to close the chains.

just an Idea check with the county or city, and see if they have any old maintainer (road grader) chains,
they may fit or one could maybe modify them to fit, even places that have old trucks (for example, end up with a truck frame that was a feed truck and it had a set of Chains on it nearly new, and some where I ended up with a second set for large 20" tires),

If you want to save some time, tirechains.com sells pre-cut cross lengths with the attachment hooks already installed.. They also sell the side chain by the foot as well

Tire Chains Cross Chains

good luck.. I am considering making a set for my 2320 - but I want to price the parts out to see the cost savings..

For those biggish rings, if you weld, automotive coil springs cut and welded closed make fo great chain rings.
Also you could weld strips to act as claws on the underside of the rings as they do for logging chains.
The coil springs being hardened will wear really well.

I just bent them in the vise. I keep thinking about asking the garage door guys for some broken springs from overhead doors. The can grow pretty big!!
But these are just 3/8" round rod and have held up very well.
