This is still on my long list of projects, but has anyone else made a front mounted generator on their Sub-CUT? I'm considering mounting one with the front quick attach system on my JD2520, which would allow me to use the mid-PTO to power the 5.5KW head that I have.

My thought would be that in the winter is the most likely time that I'd need this and it would be easy to drop off the snow blower and put this in it's place to get portable power.

Thoughts? Ideas? Pictures? All are welcome!

The rear PTO spins at 540 rpm while the front spins at 2100 rpm. Is the generator capable of being run at both speeds? It may be possible that you could run at a much lower engine rpm to get the 2100 mid-pto rpm to 540.

Is the generator head 1800 rpm or 3600 rpm? If the head is 1800rpm model it will most likely work.

It is a 3600 RPM head. Since the tractor is oversized for the generator head, I thought that I'd run the tractor at partial speed to improve fuel consumption and then use the appropriate sprockets/pulleys to keep the head operating at the desired speed.

I considered a PTO generator too but realized that there have been several times when my electricity was off but I wanted or needed my tractor for other things. In a snow or ice storm that takes out my power I would hate to have to choose between using my tractor and using my generator. It just made more sense to me ultimately to have a generator that is not dependent on my tractor.
All the best-

Simple solution: Get a 2nd tractor :D

I'm still not sure why you can't use your tractor and your generator during a power outage. I never leave it running 24/7. You throw it on the line to get water, heat/AC stove and some refrigeration. Maybe an hour at most. Then you drop off the generator and drive the tractor to the beer store to get fuel and refreshments. Back in an hour, break for an hour, and throw the generator on-line. What am I missing ? Need the TV?, washing machine?, garage door opener? dishwasher?, Internet? What's requiring power all the time? I don't trapse the generator around with me when its hooked up, just leave it there and attach the pto. Yes you need to have the machine on a platform so that sudden load changes don't flip it on its side. That's been handled.

I always say that as well.. but there is always the guy that is afraid if the power is out 5m the house will ice over.. or someone who takes 2.5 hours to change over a rear implement.

Dollars per kw.. it's HARD to beat a pto genset .. I love mine.

and like you say.. if you absolutely need 24/7 power AND a tractor to run all at the same time.. either spring for a second tractor.. perhaps a economy or use done with less capabilities they will 'get you by' either as the tractor or the power source, OR buy a full house genset that autostarts anytime a cloud passes by ...

Personally.. Ilike the 2nd tractor idea.. ;) plus lets you take the ptogenset elsewhere on the property if needed.. like.. um.. welding that gat post 250' away at the front of the property.. ...
