I don't know much about the 1500 but I do know that on the 1510 the diff lock shaft enters the rear case in a recessed area that tends to get filled with dirt and trash. If it enters in a similar manner on your tractor and your diff lock shaft were sheared off it might be hard to spot. Mike (MJPetersen) posted a picture in this thread a while back that shows pretty well where the shaft enters the case on a 1510.

Both ends of the shaft are exposed to an incredible amount of crud as the cross shaft travels clear through the tranny.I found a pic of a 1700 which is very similar to the 1500 to let you see exactly where it exits the tranny.
